I love a lot of the tradition that goes with the great game, but one 'tradition' I cant understand is the baggy green caps being used until they are falling apart. Punter's looks like something out of a St. Vincent de Pauls thrift shop and is quite simply an embarassment when its worn during press conferences etc.

Surely the squad should be given one for each test series, or at last one every calendar year?

Punter could have a new one whenever he wants ... he's just carrying the tradition started by Steve Waugh to keep his original baggy green.

They used to issue one for each season and tour, and had the year stitched underneath, but I think they decided there were too many caps floating around because some players would have about 20 of them and gave them to mates, etc, so they began issuing one per player. However, there are situations where a cap needs to be replaced such as Ponting's being stolen in Sri Lanka, etc. I'm not sure what the rules are these days.

I'd love to have a green baggy, not to wear, just to put in the trophy cabinet, but I guess I never deserved one so I shouldn't have one. I love the cavalier approach some of my mates have towards their state caps and the odd Test cap. They pretend it's no big thing until I offer to take it off their hands ... they suddenly change their tune

I understand why they want to keep wearing their original cap to death but I don't think it's a good look for a professional national team when it looks as bad as Ponting's.

Not that it's a huge issue really

id love a baggy green but you need to earn em...and i say if its totally fine to have one that it banged up...shows you have done the yards to get where you are etc.

Steve Waugh had the same thing done late in his career too.

Punters' baggy green mirrors his current powers of concentration. This man cannot be allowed to captain Australia in England again.

I reckon they should be given one only, yes, it looks tattered, but it gives it far more value both sentimental and monetary. They should have green baseball style caps IMO that get issued out every series, players should wear their baggy green during the first session of fielding each innings then revert to the other cap or floppy.
I get bagged at my own club for getting out my old faded cap from years ago despite having two more updated versions, I'm a traditionalist though.
