Why doesnt the ACB..........................................

Postby whufc » Thu Dec 02, 2010 9:31 am

Ever have an eye to the future when selecting the national side.

When the likes of Warne, McGrath, Langer, Hayden, Gilchrist, Gillespie were coming to the end of their careers the selectors kept picking the trusty olds around them in the likes of Hodge, Katich, Hussey, Bichel, Kasporwichz etc etc.

While a some these players have gone to become stars such as Katich and Hussey Australian cricket is coming to another phase now where they are going to have bulk retirements. The likes of Ponting, Katich, Hussey, Haddin, North even Bollinger who is nearly 30 will most likely retire within 12 months of each other, leaving another massive whole in the Australian Cricket side to fill.

While North is currently well out of form wouldnt this be the perfect oppurtunity to play a younger play like Khawaja who may not be quite ready but then will be ready when there is all these retirements.

Australian cricket is going to be down for many years to come me thinks.

Think we have plenty of young talent that just need a crack.

Only problem with blooding youngesters who are not quite ready is that it can really effect their confidence and can stagnate their progress. Look at Phillip Hughes before and after test selection. I dont know if we will ever see the best of him.

Damien Martyn, Justin Langer, Matt Hayden all had early failures at the start before coming back a champion.

I think by playing at international level at an early age gave him the opportunity to identify the flaws in his game, at least he has time to get in the nets and rectify them.

Exactly right. Few child prodigies come through to be superstars straight up. Wait til Hughes is 25 or so and see how he goes.

And Steve Waugh.

I can't remember, but wouldn't be surprised if Booney and Merv copped the chop in their early days?

Knew what it took to play at the highest level, had a taste and went back and worked on what they needed to instead of becoming has beens.

Aus need to blood new talent IMO, like the names above, they may not shine straight away but in the long term will only benefit the australian cricket team

Booney was dropped for the last test of the 86-87 Ashes. He went away and came back in 87-88 to have a breakout season.

Hughes was in and out of the side from his debut in 85-86 until cementing his spot with his famous 8-87 v the West Indies in Perth 88-89.

Ponting was also dropped at least once and possibly more times.

However - I don't recall Gilchrist ever being dropped or even having early failures after he took over from Healy. I recall he was firing from the start.

I agree with the overall sentiment of this thread. I feel the selectors these days are placing too much emphasis on Ashes series. They seem afraid to make changes too close to an upcoming Ashes series. This approach has seen the team get locked in too much for long periods of time. In the past we seem to select independent of when the Ashes were next on. Guys like Slater debuted in Ashes series.

Gilly was dropped from the NSW shield team. Part of the reason he went to play for WA.

The only disappointment Gilly had in his test career was that he didn't debut 2 years earlier.
I think the entire country knew he was a better player than Healy, and I think the ACB made a good call in not giving Healy a farewell match at the GABBA, because enough was enough and Gilly just had to play.

I would like to see more of the Australia A concept to fast track these guys to the international scene, its ok for them to be playing T20 in the IPL and putting themselves against international players that way, but i don't really think its helping our test side much(except from maybe a pressure sense).

I believe our A side would go close to topping our so called number one side. I think the listed side is alright, but go for it and change it round a bit.

Hughes
Marsh(getting on a bit maybe?)
Cowan?
Ferguson
Kwahaja
Paine
Smith
O'keefe
Johnson(yes mitch)
Copeland
George
McKay

Batting looks good but hughes and maddison will open the batting for years to become when they both develop in to good cricketers. Starc is better bowler copeland if wasn't for his injury he would have played an ashes test
