Exactly right. Few child prodigies come through to be superstars straight up. Wait til Hughes is 25 or so and see how he goes.

And Steve Waugh.
I can't remember, but wouldn't be surprised if Booney and Merv copped the chop in their early days?

Booney was dropped for the last test of the 86-87 Ashes. He went away and came back in 87-88 to have a breakout season.
Hughes was in and out of the side from his debut in 85-86 until cementing his spot with his famous 8-87 v the West Indies in Perth 88-89.
Ponting was also dropped at least once and possibly more times.
However - I don't recall Gilchrist ever being dropped or even having early failures after he took over from Healy. I recall he was firing from the start.
I agree with the overall sentiment of this thread. I feel the selectors these days are placing too much emphasis on Ashes series. They seem afraid to make changes too close to an upcoming Ashes series. This approach has seen the team get locked in too much for long periods of time. In the past we seem to select independent of when the Ashes were next on. Guys like Slater debuted in Ashes series.

I think the entire country knew he was a better player than Healy, and I think the ACB made a good call in not giving Healy a farewell match at the GABBA, because enough was enough and Gilly just had to play.

I believe our A side would go close to topping our so called number one side. I think the listed side is alright, but go for it and change it round a bit.
Hughes
Marsh(getting on a bit maybe?)
Cowan?
Ferguson
Kwahaja
Paine
Smith
O'keefe
Johnson(yes mitch)
Copeland
George
McKay
Mitch Marsh 12th

i'm not an aussie fan at all but there is no way in the world that listed side would go close to the currant test side.
