Cricket coverage on Australian tv - ch9 lose rights

Postby Booney » Thu Oct 29, 2015 1:18 pm

CRICKET and rugby league fans will finally be able to watch the sport in high definition on Channel 9 after the free-to-air broadcaster announced a giant shake-up.
Channel 9 is going back to the future to give cricket fans the chance to watch Australia’s summer of cricket in HD on the Nine Network’s flagship channel.
But it won’t be available until the third Test in the series between Australia and New Zealand.

The former Packer-backed station will begin broadcasting in HD in time for the first day-night Test from Adelaide Oval, beginning November 27.

While fans have been screaming for a digital revolution for years, outdated anti-siphoning legislation forbid free-to-air broadcasters from screening in high definition at the expense of standard definition because of the households without access to a high definition television.

With more than 90 per cent of Australians now having access to a HD TV, changes to the anti-siphoning laws in August have allowed Channel 9 to shake-up its sports presentation.

Channel 9 will also simulcast the third Test of the series in standard definition through it’s series of digital channels to allow viewers without a HD television to watch the action.

To accommodate the HD upgrade there will be a realignment of Nine Network channel numbers. 9HD will be available through Channel 90, while the SD broadcast will be on Channel 91 (and 9).

Gem will move to Channel 92 and GO will now be seen on Channel 93 (and 99).

Channel 9’s switch to high definition means Gem will become a standard definition channel from November 26 when the channels are rearranged.
While the 2015 Ashes series in England was also shown in HD on Gem, this will be the first time Channel 9 shows any sport in HD.

Cricket Australia rejects joint TV rights bid by Nine and Ten today.

Cricket Australia has rejected a joint bid for broadcast rights from Nine and TEN because they were not high enough.

“CA can confirm it rejected the bid of the consortium. Discussions are ongoing with other parties,” a Cricket Australia spokesman said.

Those discussions include FOX Sports however anti-siphoning laws mean Test matches, Australian Twenty-20s and one-day internationals cannot be shown exclusively on Pay TV unless the Free to Air networks pass on the content. The laws do not cover the Big Bash, which is broadcast on TEN.

FOX Sports executives were said to be frustrated by the combined Nine-TEN bid and restrictions imposed by the anti-siphoning list.

And the players negotiated a new pay deal similar to the AFL where they get a fixed percentage of the games revenue.

Silly boys.

Nine Entertainment and Network Ten have put a new and improved offer on the table for Cricket Australia's broadcast rights to keep the sport exclusively on free-to-air television for the next six years.

The new bid, understood to be valued around $150 million annually, or $900 million over the six years of the deal, would see Ten retain the Big Bash League while Nine would keep the Test matches. But international Twenty20 and 50 over matches would switch from Nine to Ten under the new offer.

Nine and TEN have upped their bid for Cricket broadcasting, while FOX Sports, which took an offer off the table on Friday, is reportedly back in discussions.

FOX Sports is believed to be interested in a partnership with Seven, which is effectively seeking a replacement for the Australian Open is loses to Nine after next year.

Tensions surround the negotiations which have seen Cricket Australia’s chairman apologise to TEN for referring to them as “bottom feeders” whilst Foxtel director of sports Peter Campbell also hung up on Cricket Australia’s negotiating team on Friday.

Will be interesting to see what happens. I cant see Ch9 forking out for both cricket and the australian open, it doesnt make sense to pay that much to have a lot of the content relegated to a secondary channel

News Corp papers saying the deal still to be worked out between 7 and 10. But given 10s financial position and 7 losing the tennis you would think it’s way more likely that it’s 7

Yep.

Wouldn’t surprise me if taylor and Warne went wherever. And Pietersen would be there. Slater and Chappell and Lawry? Doubt it

May pave the way for Gerard whateley to get onto tv

On the surface appears to be a terrible outcomes for those without foxtel. Sign of the times.

Would rather C10 get the test matches. C7's coverage of the AFL leaves a lot to be desired (ie sub-standard commentators, cutting to the news 5 seconds after the final siren). Plus we dont need more Hame, Basil etc on our screens.

Wonder if this is one of the reasons Brayshaw jumped ship to 7? He would be involved one would think.

Fox will have a good line up, they always do. Would expect them to snare Punter, Gilly etc if their 10 contracts are up.

Sad if we've heard the last of Big Bill calling the first session at on Boxing Day. Not sad I don't have to listen to Chapelli anymore hopefully.
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

I don’t think that article is quite right, I think limited overs games involving Australia in Australia are still on the anti siphoning list. The thing that isn’t is the big bash. You would expect the number of games of big bash to increase significantly with lots more games on at the same time, like the afl is now

No doubt this will give Andy Maher the opportunity to be the chief cricket commentator on 1 of these networks.

James Sutherland: There will be more cricket coverage on free to air tv than ever before.

Then mumbles through how it's due to the massive increase in coverage of women's cricket. That's great that there's more coverage for women's cricket but to even pretend it's comparable to ODIs that are leaving free to air is a joke. It's like he thinks the general public are fools...perhaps time we'll show he's right but I doubt viewers are going to find it a satisfying substitute.
