AB de Villiers ruled out of Australia tourESPNCRICINFO

AB de Villiers has been ruled out of the home ODI and away Test series against Australia with an elbow injury. He will undergo an operation early next week and will need six to eight weeks of recovery time.

"AB has failed to come through his fitness test this morning," Mohammad Moosajee, SA team manager said. "Although the physio strapped his elbow while he was batting and he did have some relief with some shots, the elbow pain has not gone away completely. With that in mind, we are scheduling surgery early next week."

De Villiers will sit out the five home ODIs - beginning on September 30 - and the three Tests in Australia in November, one of which will be South Africa's first day-night fixture. De Villiers also missed the two Tests against New Zealand in August and the one-off ODI against Ireland because of the injury.

Rilee Rossouw will remain with the ODI squad for the series against Australia

Wowee

Went the journey. De Kock was doing it on his... De Kock

What was that about Starc injuring his leg on a springy stump in a fielding warm up? Did I miss that? When, where, how...?

Giving them a go is good after they've done well for Australia A but they're not up to international standard.

What other form line are they supposed to go on? Both India and South African sides had players with international experience in their line ups.

Well yeah that's what they use to gauge the blokes that are next in line and Worrall, Mennie and Tremain were all very good in that A series.

As they say its all about preparing for the next world cup and giving these second-tier bowlers a crack is part of that preparation.

Having a look at it they've given a few young quicks a crack now as they test the depth. Since Hazlewood, Hastings and Starc all debuted in 2010 they've had-

Pattinson
Cummins
Cutting
Richardson
Faulkner
Coulter-Nile
Abbott
Sandhu
Boland
Paris
Worrall
Mennie
Tremain

Spinners-
Doherty
Krejza
Lyon
Ahmed
Agar
Zampa

Great to give them a crack but they have been thrown to the wolves a little bit, with an away series and them all playing in the same lineup.

Not like a random South Africa ODI series means anything anyway, so why not

Why would an all rounder be batting in front of Trav and a shit one at that? Smith and or Lehmann have lost the plot.
No doubt he'll do a Valente on me now

It's a f**king joke mate. Traditionally you look at Head as a genuine number 5 batsman while Marsh should always be batting at 6 IMO, the allrounders position. He's done well in ODI cricket at 6 and just doesn't have the game to bat in the top 5. I vaguely remember watching a Lehmann press conference where someone asked him what you've asked. I don't remember exactly what he said but it was some piss poor answer that was once again justifying Marsh's spot in the team.
