Why was Siddle operating without a slip just after lunch when they are 5 for less than a hundred on a wicket with some green in it?
Is it a) captain has no confidence in the Australian opening bowler to produce an edge against a number 7 or
b) captain has NFI and shouldnt be in the team

Especially when the next batsman in is Snicko Marsh,

Siddle couldnt get bat to ball in the 1st test then send him in as night watchman FFS

Completely agree.

As an amateur hack opening batsmen I was always of the theory that the reason I was the opening batsmen was that I was supposedly the best equipped to handle the new ball and see it off so why and the hell would we send someone supposedly less equipped in. I also liked the ability of being able to bat without any pressure to score runs, felt it was a really enjoyable way to 'see the opposition bowlers'

Now watch our normal number 6 or 7 bat get stranded with the tail and make a great looking 30-40 not out.

I think if you said before the start of play we'll bowl Pakistan out for 280/290 I would of taken it. Over to the batsman now to build a score.

Considering he is only 31, Lyon could very well finish up near Glenn McGrath for number of wickets taken.

Astonishing really, considering his journey from SACA groundskeeper to test off spinner.

You two are surely taking the piss aren't you? You'd send in and risk a genuine batsman so close to the end of play? That's the idea of the nightwatchman FFS.

Protect your batsmen, trust that they'll get the job done over the course of the next day - no one gives a shit about a great looking 30-40 not, only care about winning, and if Australia were 2/20 with Khawaja and Marsh both in the sheds, you'd say advantage Pakistan, and be asking why Marsh wasn't protected with a N/W.

More bad than good can come from sending in the batsman late in the evening IMO.
