Jimmy back and has immediate impact in his 150th test match. Coming back from his calf injury that stuck around for awhile I'm interested to see how he goes in this series. England aren't playing a spinner with an attack of Anderson, Broad, Archer and Curran plus Stokes. Also interested to see what Archer does in South African conditions.

Curran bowled well.

I wrote Jimmy Anderson off during the ashes, got that wrong.

Enjoyed watching that days play last night, had a bit of everything in it.

England may rue not going in with a front line spinner

South Africa all out for 284.
Rababa almost had Burns out first ball of England's innings with Paul Rifle giving it out caught behind before Burns successfully reversed the decision. Rababa looked dangerous in his first over and Philander was getting a bit of nip of the seam.

Eng 7/176
Half way through Day 2 and the pitch is doing all sorts
Behaving like a Day 5 pitch in Australia with its Variable bounce and ball randomly nipping around
DeCocks 95 was 1st class under the conditions

From what i've seen over recent years, it seems all South African Test matches are played on pitches like this. Certainly makes for more interesting watching than the cricket borefest Australian pitches produces.

Make that 8/176 with Buttler gone caught behind to one that bounced more than expected and give DeCock his 6th catch for the innings

South Africa are home and hosed here
England chasing anything over 200 on this pitch will be extremely difficult

SA lead by 103, England's batting issues continue. Elite from Philander.

How England keep picking Bairstow is beyond me, his batting has gone backwards at a million miles an hour

Because they don't have much else and obviously England feel he's better than their previous debutants - Crawley, Roy and Pope and the batsman before that who spent some time in the team like Malan, Stoneman, Jennings and Vince.

South Africa second innings 4/72 at stumps, lead by 175.

Pope is crook. Hes the one exciting young talent we have. Another poor display wirh the bat, cant believe how bad Bairstow has become in tests. His improvement in white ball has ruined his test cricket. 4 years ago in SA he was a big reason we won a test series there.

SA 9/264 now, lead by 367, double England's first innings score
Philander 45* and Rabada on 9*, he ain't the worst number 11 going around.
