I agree keepers catch & Paine does not even move.

So why was Marsh at first slip? Because he was cooked from batting. His wife said one of his superstitions is to not apply sunscreen when bats. He was way too wide particularly considering Hazlewood was bowling around the wicket.

Agreed Marsh was far too wide but it was still Paine's catch. That shot by Vince was absolute snot.

Been a tad wet in sydney early this morning and now 5-10mm of rain forecast to fall during the day. Perhaps a savour for England in this test

60% chance of 1-5mm "late afternoon and evening", I assume that's the cool change we got 2 days ago.

The other 40% chance is 10-20mm knowing Sydney’s weather.

UPDATE: England skipper Joe Root has been released from hospital and is "likely to bat at some point" on the final day of the Magellan Ashes Series despite suffering from severe dehydration.

Root was hospitalised with diarrhea and vomiting having endured temperatures of 42 degrees on Sunday, but was released and was expected to arrive at the SCG on Monday morning.

The right-hander was set to resume on 42 not out as England fight to save the fifth Test, but the resumption of his innings will be delayed.

England will start the day 210 runs behind Australia and staring down the barrel of a 4-0 series loss.

Mitchell Marsh, who completed his second Ashes century just after lunch yesterday, said the extreme heat was a challenge for those on the field.

"This morning was one of the hottest conditions I’ve batted in in Australia," Marsh said. "Even the warm-up was boiling hot."

Root also suffered a nasty blow in the finger late on day four but brushed off the pain and continued batting to see England to 4-93 at stumps.

England assistant coach Paul Farbrace confirmed after play that Root’s finger was "just sore" and spoke about how the tough Ashes campaign will help shape the 27-year-old as a leader in the future.

"He is very determined," Farbrace said.

"That’s something although he’s not scored the runs and the big hundreds he would’ve liked to have scored this series, the one thing he has done is try to apply himself and get stuck in and play as well as he possibly can do.

"His way of talking within the team is very much about application and getting stuck in and fighting.

"Equally you need to back that up with a high level of skill in international cricket.

"We’ve seen in the dressing room, the way that he leads, the way that he speaks, the way he is around the team that he is growing in to and is going to become a very good captain.

"He’ll have learnt a lot in this series. He’ll have learnt a lot in his short time as England captain.

"And he will only get better from that experience, because that is the nature of the person and we see that with his batting as well."

I know they're looking to save the test, but has England got enough in the tank to remove this deficit and worst case make the Aussies bat again (even if only 20 runs)?

No, I doubt it. They still need 170 odd, there's about 80 overs to go today and they're barely getting 2 an over now.

Now that Root is in, who is clearly going to be flat, I don't see that rate accelerating to a point that they get 3-3.5 an over and have themselves 40 or 50 in front late today.

I'd say they'll be lucky to get within 100 or make tea, which ever comes first. The tail they have is long, very, very long.

Looks like we are going to have to rely on the new ball to do some damage. Pretty hard to get batsman out when they are just not playing any shots at all

Random question, one I've thought about often hoping someone might know..

How do partnerships work when someone retires hurt? Given that only FOW are recorded, so for instance the Root/Bairstow partnership yesterday, does Moeen Ali take over that partnership when Root retired hurt, and Root/Bairstow start at zero again?

Does that make sense?

If two opening batsman put on 100, one retires hurt and the #3 and opener combine for another 100, is that a 200 run 1st wicket partnership, and who is credited for it?

Might help if we bowl at the stumps too.

Root has not come out to bat after lunch.

Curran has joined Bairstow in the middle.

Reports are the Root illness is a viral thing, not fully heat induced dehydration.

Interesting that he retires hurt again, if it's viral he has not suffered that as a part of the game therefore should not have been allowed to retire hurt if i understand the rule correctly

Doesn't matter, if he doesn't bat again then he'll just be retired out - he can always retire, retiring hurt just keeps open the option of returning which sounds unlikely anyway.
