Heck, rugby league used to have an Ashes. And, I think, speedway also contests the Ashes and there have been other sporting battles between the nations portrayed as the Ashes, because of the natural link.

I think i some ways 'The Ashes' has become more of a marketing tool for any contest between Eng and Aus.

they attach it to anything, particularly sport related.

on the other note... how much grass do they leave on the pitch in a Gashes contest?

I'll just repost this:

Dogwatcher wrote: I don't understand how this is an argument for not supporting women's sport.
If you don't like second-rate crap, why follow SANFL? I hope you don't follow the A League, or the NBL.
These are all competitions that are second rate to AFL, EPL and NBA. Is it tokenism to follow those competitions?
People don't have a problem supporting and cheering our women's athletes at the Olympics. They don't debate the merits of the Hockeyroos as compared to the Kookaburras in hockey, they just accept that they exist and compete at the highest level they possibly can and celebrate their successes at the Olympics or Comm Games.
So why the animosity for Aussie rules and cricket?

Compared to what?

If you're comparing it to mens cricket then yes, it's comparatively average, if you're comparing it to womens cricket from 5 years ago you're wrong.

Either way I'm not sure why you're in here. It'd be like me going in the soccer threads. @Dogwatcher

Do I? No. Would I? Yes, I would. I'd pay to watch the Womens Ashes Test long before I'd pay to watch the BBL.

You don't need to be invited, just be prepared to be challenged if you choose to enter a forum and question the subjects validity. Fair? ( Yes, it is ;) )

I’d pay to see lawn bowls before bbl.

The cricket team I support is called South Australia and they have the colours of red and black. Not this plastic thing called Adelaide Strikers wearing blue [emoji6]

I'm not sure I hate the BBL per se, I do hate the fact it has hijacked the summer of cricket with manufactured franchises hosting international mercenaries wearing colors designed by Hans in a format of the game that I, and many others, believe is hindering the development of our children into top flight long form cricketers.

Yep, it gets kids through the gates with Dad wearing a sparkly wig and rave style over sized fluro sunglasses. Yep, it helps fund the Cricket Australia programs from Test to Milo cricket. Yep, it fills stadiums with people night after night instead of them sitting on their arses watching TV. Yep, it has many things going for it.

Doesn't mean I have to like it.
