I didn’t really see Greg Chappell as I was too young but I couldn’t go past AB as number 1.
Next would be Taylor followed by Ponting.

I liked Steve Waugh but didn’t rate his captaincy at times.

Waugh was number 1 for mine, just a gritty hard bloke who'd you'd love to have next to you in the trenches.

I wasn't a fan of Taylor's, thought the captaincy kept him in the team for too long, his 334 not out was his only highlight in his last 3 or 4 years.

I thought he was sluggish and one dimensional, couldn't field anywhere but slips and thought he was selfish by playing in the ODI's with a sub 60 strike rate when we had plenty of better options at the time.

AB optimized the "Aussie battler", would take the game on and practiced what he preached, he was a stern leader.

Greg Chappell, very majestic with the bat, very smart with tricks up his sleeve, I think the captaincy sapped the skill out of his game, the Trevor Chappell incident nailed his coffin.

Wasn't around for Chappelli, but since then Taylor was by far our best, and then, for tactics and the feel of the game, Clarke.

Waugh and Ponting were charge-in, knock-em down types that worked when we had the team of the early 2000's, but unravelled towards the end of Ponting's time due to the inferior players we had. With the spinners we have had since Warne and Magill, I don't think these Waugh and Ponting would have been able to use them to our advantage in how Clarke did when Lyon was coming into the team.

Since World War 2, 3 captains absolutely stand out, Bradman, Benaud and I Chappell.

You can argue about the rest post I Chappell but they are the three who any historian rate highest.

Bradman 10 wins 0 losses and 5 draws

Benaud never lost a series and Ian Chappell's stats have already been quoted.

Furthermore Benaud and Ian Chappell were the most attacking captains that I have ever seen.

Benaud would try to win test matches that no modern captain would dream of trying to win. In the famous tied test of 1960-61 at tea Australia were 6 wickets down for 109 chasing 233. How many captains would try to chase down 124 runs in 120 minutes with only 4 wickets hand. Benaud did.

Unfortunately I can't really knock the line up, it's a bit of horses for courses but no one is bashing down the door, mainly because there has been no door due to BBL.

When you look at averages, Shaun Marsh @ 88 has to be included but we all know what's happened there, Pucovski @ 104, but that was aided by an innings of 243.
Burns @ 47 without scoring a century shows consistency and is an obvious choice for the Gabba with the pink ball, I really think he's going to take this opportunity by the throat here as will Labaschagne (who I don't really rate).

Of the other batsmen in the top 10 shield runs for the season averaging over 40 we have Wade, Cooper, Larkin, D.Hughes & Lehmann, Hughes is the only one I'd consider.

The bowling is about right, Boland should've come into consideration before Siddle but I can understand why they chose Pete, if Starc or Cummins broke down our attack would be too green, Tremain would be another Sayers episode IMO.

All in all, looking at our list, we are a long way off the pack now and 4th or 5th is about right, I'd hate to play the KIwi's right now.

Yeah, think they have pretty much got it as right as they could this time, although I'd have Head at 6.
While I'm a big fan of Renshaw, unfortunately he doesn't deserve a spot at the moment.

Head needs to be pushed up the order IMO, he needs to bat with batsmen so he doesn't panic and think he'll be left stranded, playing for the Redbacks has probably placed too much pressure on him to score and score at a reasonable rate.

I reckon we back Burns in here, be good to see Burns and Harris put together a couple of scores and partnerships here and at least settle the top of the order for us before we finalise an Ashes line up.

Thats like saying Laubaschagne will keep Smith out. You don't want it to happen but I think it will.

Most of the Australian cricket supporters want Smith back in, probably only a third want Warner back in but most would rather be successful without him.
