When our bowlers have taken 40/40 wickets this summer, and our bats can't put on a decent partnership, why do you feel the need to drop a bat and bring in another bowler?

Pattinson has bowled shit in the shield, was carted last game. He is miles off it.

Still good news that he's up and running. An Australian cricket scene with Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins, Pattinson, Richardson, Worrall, Sayers etc gives us some real depth in that department in different conditions around the world.

With the lack of movement and any other deviations/ variations, Handscomb's dodgy technique will not be exposed as easily at the MCG.

Having said that he CANNOT be in the Ashes squad to go to England, can you imagine what Anderson and co will do to him on a seamers wicket?

Imagine what Jimmy would do to the rest of the team then !
Here are the current averages of the 6 batsman who played in the second test
33.37 FINCH
34,82 S MARSH
35-50 HARRIS
35.62 HEAD
39;00 HANDSCOMBE
42.80 KHAWAJA

Yes he averages more than 4 others in Test cricket !
Averages can be deceptive at times
Handscombes average was 50 for long enough, but has taken a dive since then
Yes he is iffy, but he is arguably the best fieldsman of the above

Correct, came into the test side for the Australian summer in 2016/17, making 399 runs at 99.75.

Since then, he's had 21 innings and made just 498 at 26.21, with only 2 scores over 36.

His last 10 innings, 170 runs at 18.89.
Safe to say international bowlers have him worked out.

I like Handscomb, thought was a good player and was wrapped with his start in test cricket but the stats don't lie, he's gone backwards at a phenomenal rate.

If Paine didn’t keep would his batting get him in the team? Reasonable form

Bring in Carey to keep, Paine at 6

Paine is technically sound, but don’t think he could play as a specialist bat.

Why on earth would you ever take the gloves off paine? His glove is work is unreal and much better then carey still.

My thought was ATM he is too valuable being captain and his fingers are one knock away from retirement. Keeping would be just about killing his hands and if he is performing better than Hanscomb with the bat it’s a gamble I would take

After being such a shock selection for the Ashes last year I reckon he's been very good behind the stumps, was awesome during that series and hasn't really put a good wrong since. Him as wicketkeeper and the bowlers have been the winners in the team and not something we need to worry about, all the real issues are above Paine in the batting order. I don't think the selectors should get too funky and have him playing as a specialist bat and I'm not sure it will work.

Carey's time will come after Paine has retired, whether the reason being him thinking his time is up, injury or his form with the gloves is no good.

He's averaged 37.43 since his return and that's aided by a 61 not out on an absolute road in Dubai, I'm not sure that would be enough to earn his spot as a batsman.

Concentrating on one skill might help his average though

Sometimes we have our rose coloured glasses on with Carey being an SA lad, but despite his good scores in recent years, Paine is a superior keeper and technical batsman than him at this moment in time.

Paine just doesn't have the flashy brilliance and big strokes, and didn't cut his teeth in T20.

I only said Carey because he is assumed to be next in line. I would even consider Nevill

Carey is 100% next in line. one thing the Aussie team does well is back their keeper. Carey will be in his prime when he comes into the side and then it will be up to the next group to refine their trade before taking over.

Carey is good, Paine is better, yes we all chased him with lit torches and pitchforks when he got the nod but you cannot give him anything less than a B+ since he's recall.

Carey will get his turn, injury would be my guess, hopefully he does enough to maintain his spot from there, soon Smith will be back so we will be less reliant of Paine as we have no one to captain in our current team, Lyon would be NIL for mine.

Opened the batting in odi's for Australia and did OK.
