Shaun Marsh was batting brilliantly
Ump gives him out LBW to a ball that I thought was missing leg stump
That innings was prob just enough to give him his 'ump'teenth last chance for the Sydney test

I just think umpires should be conservative with LBW calls. There's a strong chance that was going down leg, so not out.

Do you think for years we over estimated ‘angle’

That would never have been given 10 years ago.

Around the wicket hitting on leg/middle would have always been naturally assumed missing the stumps easily.

Whether we like it or not the angle it was just clipping the stumps.

Extremely unlucky to be fired there
Umpires need to be VERY sure its out otherwise benefit of the doubt to the batsman and then let DRS prove otherwise.

Live it just looked like angling down leg. DRS showed clipping by 1 mm
POOR decision in my book.

Tho not as bad as some of the Diabolical shockers that have been given in Shield cricket the past few seasons

Nah DRS is there to get rid of the stinkers a la Katich smashing it into his pads at Trent bridge in 2005.

No way was was that a stinker, unfortunate, unlucky but close enough to be given out.

IF DRS has changed one thing about LBWs is that so may balls are now shown as hitting the stumps compared to "benefit of the doubt/probably just missing" being given not out pre DRS. Umpires reviewing their performances are seeing so many balls like that actually hitting the stumps or likely to hit the stumps so they are now more confident in giving balls like that out.

Problem is Marsh is always batting well until he gets out.
He just doesn’t go on with it.

He’s proven he’s not up to this standard.
Had a reasonable career but time too move him on also.

I guess what I’m trying to say is on the basis of drs it wasn’t that bad a deciscion it was hitting the stumps after all

Is it us and our view of the angle we believe exists that is incorrect.

Where we used to think hitting middle/leg meant missing maybe that was an over estimate of the angle that in reality existed as proven by DRS

Ps AM Bays last paragraph summaries well what I am thinking.

I reckon there are a few issue priotised above him at the moment.

Drs showed it hitting(just) so it’s out.
Stays with umpires decision.
I’m fine with that.

I still don’t trust DRS completely and think it’s prone to errors aswell

Shaun Marsh and Finch would be the first to go for me.
Heck I’d even keep the dumber Marsh if I had too.

A lot depends on whether batsman plays forward or back
Getting hit in front of middle playing BACK to a ball angling down leg, it's still likely to hit the stumps as ball only has 2 feet to travel
Play FORWARD and get hit in same spot the ball will clearly miss. Those few feet forward or back are massive as to whether an angled ball will hit or miss. Marsh playing from the crease, was extremely unlucky to be given. Far too much doubt but umpire obviously saw it different.
Aust have bigger problems going forward than that 1 decision tho.

Personally I'd rather umpires having the courage of their convictions to make decisions rather than stand there as glorified ball counters and jumper holders. No way was that a bad decision, gutsy decision yes but not a bad one.

It's a game that relies on human decision making and skill execution: batting, bowling and umpriing.

That's what makes it such a great game, best game in the world IMO,

Surely it has to be more accurate than our front on visual estimates.

There is no way an umpire at the speed it happens can tell the exact distance a player is forward at the exact point of contact therefore angle that existed

Such a pity Mitch Marsh wasn’t involved in sandpaper-gate. At least we would have been shot of him too for a while.
