I've never wanted to rate Kohli as high as Smith but now prepared to concede Kohli is with Smith in a league of their own. Kohli is probably the more vulnerable looking early in his innings but once he is set his shot execution is a joy to watch.

There's a stark difference between the two styles, that's for sure, Kohli nearly as pure as you get, Smith as unorthodox as you get.

When comparing the two though you need to look at how batter friendly the wickets Kohli plays on in India are, he's had success elsewhere for sure, but a low, slow deck in Chennai in 45° isn't exactly as bowler friendly as the Gabba or WACA. I guess you could say the same about Smith in Melbourne and Adelaide in recent times, too.

Kohli averages 55 in test matches in Australia so not sure the because he plays in India more often argument cuts it.

Kohli averages over 50 in Australia, India, New Zealand and South Africa

Smith averages over 50 in Australia, India, New Zealand and West Indies

Both average under 30 in Bangladesh

Both average low 40's in Sri Lanka

The shot that always amazes me is the little flick to midwicket for his single - almost appears like he gets himself side on and then when the ball is near his foot just whacks it out to the leg.

Incredible hand/eye and bat speed to execute.. and very unorthodox

Not sure we should buy into the "batter friendly argument" these days. Plenty of sides get spun out for stuff all in India just like they get paced and bounced out for stuff all on several Aussie decks. Yet the home teams in India and Australia invariably churn out the runs on their home decks. Batting on a low slow deck in 35 degrees and 95% humidity is still not easy but can be easy if the opponent doesn't have the spin bowlers to exploit those conditions. I think its more a case in India of being able to very large once you get a start which can be aided by the weather conditions. It would be great if the English and South African wickets could be carted around the world for all test matches to be played on.

Looking a some highlights, Siddle actually got forward to the ball and didn't get caught falling over himself (Wade)

Paines dismissal was a shocker

I'd back myself against Denley

I always thought Ponting would be the greatest Aussie bat i'd see in my time without a doubt. If Smith keeps this up it's going to be very hard to split the two.

Punter beautiful to watch, Smith not as much but boy does he churn out the runs.
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Paine’s only shot he can score a boundary off is the hook shot.
Can drop and run, but that’s pretty much it. Hence why only 1 First Class Century in 15yrs.

Was a great innings but one of the greatest of all time is going a bit far. It is made to look better than it was because of the ineptness of the rest of the batsman as evidenced by the performances of Siddle and Lyon.

At a guess, Lara would be a fair candidate for that award.

Ive said it before but what ever happened to picking your best 11 and then choosing a captain from those 11, Its disgraceful that this bloke gets a game because they haven't got the balls to put a Cummins, Head or Khawaja in charge, **** me its only the captain of a cricket team not the prime minster. We cant win the Ashes with Paine, Carey must come in. Id also go as far as to say it would be the CA board that puts Paine in charge, the selectors would get no say in it

Its a dilemma for the selectors/Board... IMO Paine was the absolute Godsend we needed when our Brand stunk up the joint. His diplomacy and resilience was Gold when we needed a public face with experience, composure and charisma to wade through the Darkest Hours. He was great in instilling a change in direction in Culture.
Right now he is holding back Carey who is clearly a better bat, but maybe just behind as a keeper, but not enough to keep him out. However, I think the Board feels indebted to him for his efforts.
So, whilst I agree with your thought re Carey, I feel its harsh to call it a disgrace... the guy has served us well in difficult times.

The obsession with Carey is a little premature IMO. He's a good short form bat, but not sold he's ready for test cricket - and Paine is still a far superior gloveman for now.

Carey will get his chance, personally i'm happy for it to be on Aussie soil.

Paine deserves more respect and support from the Aussie faithful - as Northerner pointed out - he guided our national side through the darkest hours over the past 12 months and reinstilled some grit and positive culture about the side.
