And conversely what a debacle and absolute failure from us.
Need to make some hard calls going forward from here and work out the direction this team wants to go. Was a botched tournament from us right from the outset and some heads have to roll because of it

Starting with finding an allrounder. I can see why selectors stuck with M Marsh for so long cos there aint any alternatives.
Then lets forget the Maxwell experiment. Hes not good enough.
And finally...never play Handscomb in any format ever again... even if he gets runs against county and state bowlers his technique is as bad as I have seen at first class level.
Incidentally Lyon again exposed as not being up to scratch in ODI.

And yet we made the semi finals, which 6 teams didn't, and only lost to the pre-tournament favourites, on their home turf.

It's disappointing, but we were not embarrassed. Like India, we saved our worst for the first half an hour of the semi (batting innings).

Considering the national team has been in a nadir over the last twelve months, there's plenty of upside.

Anyway, I'm done with limited overs cricket for another four years.

Do you think Zampa would've been a better option?

Genuine question. As a leg spinner he looks more dangerous, but tends to bleed runs while Lyon's actually been quite economical in his stop-start ODI career.

You forgetting us meekly rolling over to a rubbish Saffers side with nothing to play for which sent us to Edgbaston to play the Poms.

Exactly, Lyon had the third best economy rate of the Aussies for the tournament at 5.32 RPO (Cummins 4.95 and Behrendorff 5.13 the two best). Didn't have a huge impact wickets wise but he was the better option in terms of control.
Other economy rates of the better spinners in the WC-
Jadeja 3.70
Santner 4.87
Tahir 4.92
Yadav 5.02
Ali 5.34
Al Hasan 5.39

Northerner if not Zampa over Lyon then who else do you pick then?

I tweeted exactly that last night.

Park cricketers all over Australia look at Handscomb and think "Nah mate, that's not going to work" and any bowler who can bend one in a bit looks at him and thinks "I've got one here".

How the **** does he get to that level playing like that? He's the most unconvincing international cricketer I've ever seen. It's an indictment on our whole national system.

Maybe a bit of karma for letting a cheating dog back into the team? I might actually watch the final now he's not playing.

Finch choked big time.

Had been great all tournament but under the pressure of a final fell back into old habits.

Was always going to be downhill from there when your skipper chokes like that.

Time to move him on. He wont be there at the next world cup and we genuinely have some good young one day openers coming through the ranks.

I like Zampa but I don't think he's a better option than Lyon, Lyon needs to bowl in tandem with a tight pace bowler to try and force the batsman into taking risks.

Actually he only made 11 from his last 3 innings.. so one might suggest form had already dipped.

The squad looked brittle from the outset, the changes for the semi were bewildering.. we shouldn’t have expected anything different.

Take out Warner & Carey’s efforts over the round robin games and we prob would’ve lost more than we won.

Pick on merit, to suit conditions but not on name.. I would’ve loved to see a genuine swing bowler included like Neser or Worrall.. an aggressive wicket taking leggy like Boyce (Zampa isn’t bad but doesn’t turn it), and love him or hate him Wade deserved a crack - he’s been the best bat in Australia for 18 months.

NCN & Stoinis were yuck selections, Maxwell barely ahead of those two.

Especially after Head and Wade have been in stellar form in the same format.

Plenty of holes to fill for next campaign, we mess around with the team too much and the balance was poo.

Furthermore, how do we suffer so many injuries? It's not football, I treated my body like shit and still managed 20 odd overs each Saturday, some days there was blood pissing out of multiple blisters on my feet, my back was sore and my big toe nail was floating around somewhere in my sock but I got through, these guys have so much conditioning and special diets yet they fall to pieces every couple of months, and they're friggin batsmen.

He's never scored a run in a World Cup semi whilst being captain.

I can understand the love for Stoinis, he does have it in him, NCN gets a gig whenever he stops being broken though, it's crap.
