For some reason you think cricketing hero's will live forever, dunno why its seems different to other sporting legends that leave us too soon but it does for some reason.

Like others have posted I was in shock when I got the ESPN Cricinfo notification about his death. I always enjoyed his commentary and while he played before I knew what cricket was I've always read as a batsman he was a pioneer and set the tone for the way the Aussie's played ODI cricket. He was my dad's favourite cricketer and I remember him always saying Jones ran like a rabbit between the wickets.

I first learnt about Jones watching the ABC doco Cricket in the 80's where they discussed his most notable innings, his double century against India in 1986 where he suffered from severe dehydration.

Hearing Greg Ritchie speak of that innings in Madras emphasised just how gutsy he was, he was very ill, he lost 8 kilo's during it and copped tirades from AB about being soft and not wanting to continue.

Obviously a larger than life sort of character and seeing the tributes flowing in last night (predominantly from Pakistani followers) was very moving.

Like many Australian blokes in their 40's Jones was a poster boy of our early cricket watching days.

I'm not old enough to recall the World Series Days, my earliest cricket memories are of the era when Jones started. He played One day cricket different to everyone else, intensity like we'd not seen before at the crease and between them as he pushed his batting partner to strive for one more when the ball was in the outfield.

In the field he introduced sunglasses to the uniform, often with frames and lenses far too flashy for the establishment. He skirted around the boundary in the field and when he picked it up as the batsman went for the third you knew they were in trouble.

When every other cricketer looked, because they had, like they had just had a pie and a pint for lunch he was a figure of fitness, this no more evident than that amazing innings in India where any lesser man, be it tough or fit, wouldn't have survived.

What a bloody shame.
PAFC. Forever.

LOOK OUT, WE'RE COMING!
