Mark Taylor raised an interesting point yesterday surrounding the pick the best 11 in the test team but also having an eye to the future.

Its looking increasingly likely Warner is out of the Adelaide test with Khawaja to come in and open. Its almost a certainty Khawaja will out bat Harris.

This will then leave the selectors with all but no choice to go with two 35 year olds as the opening pair and not really any other opener in the country with test match experience, thinking a line will be drawn through Harris if he fails again, Renshaw doesn't even open these days, Burns 32 year old had a few failed opportunities.

Should the selectors be trying to get a Street or Hunt in the side so we avoid inevitably having two brand new openers in a couple of years.

I’d still pick Renshaw to open.

Not concerned that its a pretty big step from batting middle order in the shield to facing the first ball at test level. His been pretty well protected by Street, Labuschange, Khawaja this year.

Looking on the CA app make of this what you will if anything at all, his been pretty well protected by Street, Burns, Khawaja, Labuschangne. Two highest scores being the two latest times his come in and the two lowest scores being the two earliest times his come in.

Also not sure how you could pick Renshaw when his state selectors don't even think his the better opener in the state and they look to have got it pretty right with the way Street has performed, being arguably the premier opener in the shield.

vs SA: come in at 81st over, scored 10
vs WA come in at 7th over scored 9
vs WA come in at 36th over scored 43
vs TAS come in at 81st over scored 120 not out
vs SA come in at 34th over scored 3
vs SA come in at 66th over scored 41
vs Tas come in at 44th over scored 11.

With all the older blokes in the team already, its a great opportunity to look beyond an Uzzy type at 35.... its a shame Puckovski is out as he really is the man.

I think Street fits the mould beautifully. Reckon we could do with an opener who looks to faces lots of balls, occupy the crease. If he can handle the swinging ball he could really protect our flimsy 5-6-7 batting from having to face the new ball to often, especially in English conditions.

Nathan Lyon became the 17th bowler to take 400 wickets in test match cricket. He is 2 wickets behind the 16th placed Curtly Ambrose.

Mitch Starc now has 258 test wickets in 62 matches, one behind Jason Gillespie who is in 8th spot on the most test wickets for Australia list. Dizzy took 259 in 71 matches.

Pat Cummins now has 171 test wickets in 35 matches, going ahead of Terry Alderman and Keith Miller who both took 170 wickets in 41 and 55 matches respectively.

Cummins who is 21st on the most test wickets for Australia list has strike rate of 46.3, better than any of the top 20. Starc is second best with a strike rate of 49.4 followed by Mitch Johnson with 51.1.

Josh Hazlewood now has 215 test wickets, now one behind Clarrie Grimmett after being level with Merv Hughes prior to the first Ashes test. He is now in 15th spot on the most test wickets for Australia list and has played 56 matches.

Interesting comparison between Gillespie and Starc. Gillespie clearly the better bowler but the stats dont show that. Just shows that Warne and McGrath cleaned up the tail more often, leaving no scraps for Dizzy, thats my take on it

You would be right in saying that Daisy, Warne and McGrath took alot of wickets against the tail at very good averages.
The first dismissal breakdown is Gillespie then McGrath then Warne.

Dizzy's average of 26.13 and RPO of 2.85 are still very good compared to the other Aussie bowlers but he only took the 8 five wicket hauls, everyone else in the top 12 are in double figures.
