Not cricket related. But being here now and seeing first hand the plight of the locals is eye opening.
The fact that our cricketers are here is providing an enjoyable distraction from what is otherwise a challenging life.
Queuing for fuel is common place…. Kilometre upon kilometres long. My driver told me, locals taxi and tuk tuk drivers spend 2 days waiting on the side of the road for fuel. Drive 1 day. Then wait another 2 days for more fuel. The tuk tuk guys sleep in their vehicles.
Power comes and goes, and most people need gas to cook in their homes. They also need to line up for a day, or more, to fill gas bottles.
The result of corruption at every level of government and the dollars being quoted to me by my customers are staggering. One guy told me that politicians have been taking the countries money, and stuffing it into offshore bank accounts for years undetected.
Little wonder the population were setting buildings on fire. Passed a protest yesterday, which seemed civil enough.
A few Aussie supporters staying in my hotel. Had a beer by the pool with them a few days ago. Guess they’ve moved down to Kandy now.
