Watson rushed to hospital
October 24, 2006

AUSTRALIAN all-rounder Shane Watson has been rushed to hospital in India complaining of abdominal pain.

"He has some upper abdominal and stomach pain," a team spokesman said today.

"So they've taken him to hospital to have him checked out. We will release further details when they become available."

Watson had been one of Australia's in-form players in India, taking 3-16 off seven overs in the comfortable six-wicket win over England on Saturday.

That result kept alive Australia's chances of reaching the semi-final in the tournament ahead of its final Group A round-robin match against host India on Sunday.

Watson had also assumed Simon Katich's opening batting position alongside Adam Gilchrist during the event and looms as a likely selection in next month's opening Ashes Test against England in Brisbane.

It's understood that several other players have also been complaining of chest and stomach troubles this week.

"The initial diagnosis is a severe bout of gastritis," a team spokesman said.

"The initial test and ultrasounds are fine.

"We are just waiting on the blood test and other results."

********************************************************************************************************

Should Waston not pull up fit for the clash against India, I would say that the selectors have 2 options:

1. Replace Watson with Katich (straight swap).

2. Replace Watson with Hogg (possibly Cullen) + promote a batsman to open with Gilchrist (probably Clarke)

What does everyone else think?

My preferred option is this (once Watson is fit):

Watson in.

McGrath out of ODI side - time to go Glenn, you have had a brilliant ODI career but it is now time to do as Warney does.

Jaques in as opener.

Gilchrist
Jaques (only thing keeping him out is his fielding, but those that know say he has improved...)
Ponting
Martyn (been playing well of late, but if form drops and Cosgrove continues upwards rise then look out)
Hussey
Symonds
Clarke
Watson
Lee
Johnson
Bracken (swap for Hogg if conditions suit - I still think Georgie deserves a chance, done nothing wrong IMHO)

Not for the first Katich might be selected ahead of a player who has the runs.

Maybe we didn't give you a fair go Sotters - Geeves (for memory) was the second highest wicket-taker in the ING Cup last year behind Tait. I would think that there would be at least 6 or 7 bowlers in line before him. I have to agree that he is a better choice than pie throwers Dorey and Lewis.

As for Cameron White - he is Australia's most overrated cricketer.
