Well it has started already. There is no place for racism in sport and would like to think australians as spectators are more intelligent then some countries in regards to enjoying the game for what it is. Also think that before the English get up on their high horse and start complaining they should look in their own back yard and look back to last year ashes series where aussie players were targets of abusive taunts by the english crowds- eg barmy army. Especially dizzy who was constantly abused about being a "gypsy" a term looked down upon in england. I also think that South Africans should be the last people to accuse other of racism.

That comment is unacceptable. Trouble is, you're always going to get a few in the crowd who cannot wait to prove their ignorance. Nobody should tolerate racist comments, but I also get a little annoyed that all Aussie cricket fans get tarred with the same brush because some idiots full of booze and bad manners can't control themselves.

I was amazed to hear the morning crew on SEN say they they didn't consider the term "stupid Indian" a racist comment. What else could those words be?

AH, I'm not suggesting this is acceptable in anyway, nor was it necessarily the case, but is it possible that a thoughtless spectator has made the comment toward the team he was representing ... Ie, like calling a Glenelg player a "Stupid Tiger"?

Its a very difficult subject. for example is being call a dumb aussie, racist? the term convicts? in the UK the term Paki is regarded as racist, whereas aussie obviously isnt. both are just the shorten version of someones country of origin. its all about the intent and way it is used. would be good to only get positive press out of this fantastic summer of cricket that will are going about to see.

Panesar was representing England, not India, so therefore he wasn't having a go at the team he was representing. Nope, the comment was an attack on Panesar's heritage and his intellect. I can't view it as anything other than racist I'm afraid.

That is a distinct possibility, and that is why we need to keep thing in perspective and not blame all Aussie cricket fans for the stupid comments of a few idiots. I refuse to take the blame for other peoples' stupidity.

I don't fully subscribe to the belief that this is a blatantly racist comment. Someone further up the thread referred to 'stupid aussie' as a sledge - personally I wouldn't care if I were called that. I agree that it may be unnecessary but certainly being over reacted to.

I remember a few years back an Essendon player was reported for racial vilification against a Collingwood player. The defence was based on the comment being misheard - 'Dumb c**t' instead of 'Dark c**t'. I thought it was strange that the player was most upset at being called dark (which was at least true) and didn't seem to mind being called a c**t.

And before anyone returns fire, I have been in a situation where I was part of the minority and comments similar to those above were thrown at me all day, every day.

Without realising it, you have just illustrated the essence of the issue. The issue is not the what was said but whether or not offence is caused to the person it's being directed to. If Panesar didn't GAF about the comment it isn't really a story, just a beat up that *shudder* may prove that idiot Smith was right for the first time in his life.
