Mark Cosgrove

Another article was printed in the Advertiser today about Cosgrove's ongoing weight problems.

Apparently Lehmann has told him (finally) that his weight is what is stopping him from playing for Australia.

Does everyone think that this may be to a lack of application from Cosgrove or does the poor bugger really have a problem?
Maybe a little more match fitness would help him convert the multitude of good starts he has made this season, into big hundreds.

Yep Yep and Yep.

Many of us have weight problems but when it directly effects your work and source of income and ability to set yourself up for life you have to wonder why he doesnt put the effort in.

How many times do you see someone with all the talent in the world go to waste beacuse they dont have the application? Only to be replaced by someone who doesnt have as much talent but more than makes up for it by working their butt off.

Andrew Hilditch and Justin Langer are 2 that spring to mind.

Rick Darling is a classic example of having the talent but what did he do with it?

My brother-in-law knew him at school, and at that time he was always ducking off to the nearby Macca's for a meal.

It's in Cosgrove's hands. On international cricket forums he's known as 'the fat slogger'....are the selectors thinking along similar lines? It's tough to get the baggy green and if you won't give up the Pies and Maccas that sends a pretty strong message to those that count.

Sounds a lot like the SK Warne story - hopefully Cosgrove figures it out eventually like Warnie did and realises his full potential. There is no doubt that he is probably the most talented young batsman in the country.

At the minute Cosgrove is short changing himself about $300 000 a year. As a full time state player he is probably earning something between $100 and $200 K after his endorsements (bat contract), base retainer and match payements are taken into account...

If he gets into the test and one-day side, which his talent suggests he should be able to do, He'll earn between $400 and $500 K (minimum)

Pretty good incentive I reckon, to give the drive thru's the big drive by and to hit the versa climbers and bikes in the Adelaide Oval gym on a daily basis.

It is simpler than that, give the piss and junk food the big A for 12 months leave his gear at Adelaide Oval and ride from elizabeth each day to the oval to have a net, then ride back again guaranteed to lose the weight.

**** if that was put in front of me to earn a baggy green, i'd know what I'd be doing....

The selectors have shown over the past 15 years they don't like fat bastards....Boof used to get around 12 s in the Beep test when he was playing fior Australia that is the minimum Cosgrove should be aiming for....

LMAO. I'd rate the following as better next gen players than Cossy.

Marsh
Voges
Cowan
Paine
Birt
White

I would suggest there is considerable doubt that he is the most talented young batsman.

I think you might find alcohol is part the problem very very common to see him at the same nightclub every Friday night and a different nightclub the Saturday night. Always on the piss, his an old mate of mine, many great stories to tell but clearly alcohol isn't helping the situation.

Obviously the selectors don't doubt it though - all of those names except Paine (about 100 days younger) is older than Cosgrove, yet only one (White) has represented Australia.

Cosgrove has scored more first class hundreds (100's - 6 50's - 20) than all, bar White (who beats him by one).

I would say the selectors only rate Voges higher, and I am sure it would have been Cosgrove in the squad right now had he continued to shed kilos and converted those numerous starts he has got this season into hundreds.

Quite possibly Blinky but I've yet to see Cosgrove do anything. Maybe I haven't watched him bat as often as you have. Let's just say that I am disagreeance with the selectors on this one, as well as your good self. The selectors showed their hand by selecting Cosgrove for the Bangladesh tour as well as the PM's game and you're probably right about his weight contributing to his non selection at certain times. I just don't rate the guy yet.

Did you really look up the ages for those blokes because I sure as shit didn't.

Lol, only Paine and Cowan - the rest I knew were older than Cosgrove.

Maybe the selectors should start looking at guys like you mentioned, because we agree on one thing, that they are all extremely talented cricketers. They always talk about injecting youth into the Australian teams, and yet they persist with picking the older guys (not saying that the older blokes don't deserve to get picked). Players like Tendulkar & Lara began playing for their country when still in their teens, and yet here in Australia guys have to score 10,000 runs in domestic competiton before they are even considered, like Lehmann and Hussey.

It is a tough ask to pick 11 guys though - there are probably 30-40 players present in Australia who are better players than most current international players and would be in every other international side. Maybe Pietersen had the right idea, and if I was one of those fringe players and had the oppurtunity to play for another country, I would strongly consider it as well.

Disagree there Blink, Pieterson was only a fringe player due to the selctions policies of South African 1st class cricket (in short the white aparthied) as he didnt agree with these policies and had the opportunity to leave and did so.

Fair enough there heater. The Pietersen example was more an example of what a fringe player (ok Pietersen wasn't fringe but you get the idea) in a "similar" situation could do.

He is overweight
But its remarkable as soon as the runs dry up his weight is blamed.
When he was a runscoring machine last season, not a problem
Whether he is 95 or 100kg is irrelevant
At his height he should be about 75-80 kilos.

Might be time to settle him in the number 4 spot in both comps.

Shane Warne looks about 5 kilos heavier this year and............

Exactly. The best thing for him to do would be to score runs, but in the meantime he must at least be seen to be working his butt off. His weight may or may not affect his performance, but it can be used against him if he isn't scoring a mountain of runs. He hasn't had a bad start to the year, but well below what would be needed to make the national selectors take notice.

I like him opening the innings in the one day competition. Has he ever been tried as an opener in the Pura Cup?

COSGROVE in his stellar 2005/2006 pura cup season batted at :

3. 89 04
4. 184 26
4. 74
4. 72 89
5. 20 74
5. 04
4. 101 4

He missed the first 2 games after being penalised for being overweight

COSGROVE showed committment to the cause after being dismissed inj the SA V QLD game he
was seen on a bike on the SA balcony, pedalling away :!:

........ is the greatest bowler we will ever have the privelelige to see. Get the results on the board and what you eat, what you look like and how you act doesn't matter. Cosgrove will never be Shane Warne.
