Have heard it too. Will retire after the end of this series. God i hope not. Has so much to offer yet. Either way i'll steal a line from "The Natural" - the greatest there ever was, the greatest there is now and the greatest there ever will be.

Yeah, but that's no consolation, as apart from that suspension I can't remember a time without him.

Sure he was going to retire, but I'm shocked it was now.

I'd love to see that. Not only because I'd love to see Warnie keep playing, but it would also make those smart arse journalists look stupid. I'm tired of the way they try to pre-empt everything. Just wait until the press conference before writing his epitaph huh?

And in an unrelated incident Bill Lawry has been admited to psychiatric hospital in Melbourne suffering acute depression....

Seriously if Warne decides this is the time then that is his choice and he deserves to go out on his terms. I personally hope he announces he intends to continue through till the next Ashes series but if that isn't the case then so be it. Cricket owes Shane Warne more than Shane Warne owes cricket and that is saying something considering how much Shane Warne has benefitted from the game.

Warne was the person I least expected to retire out of Langer, Hayden, Gilchrist and McGrath. He'll definitely be Australia's biggest loss. It's a pity MacGill isn't 7 or 8 years younger. If McGrath goes as well, I expect Australia to be just another cricket team. Gone are the days we can talk about this Australian team in the same breath as any in history. Perhaps if I'm lucky there may be another absolute legend come along in my life time.

Only twice have I felt like I do at the moment with regards to cricket - the first time was when I heard Bradman died and the second time was when I heard the news tonight. How lucky have I been to grow up watching Shane Warne.

If Warnie was to announce his retirement prior to the MCG Test, I would question the value of doing that. For 15 years, English batsmen have been daunted by the prospect of facing Warne. This current bunch are still thinking they may have another 2 Ashes series on top of this to face the guy.

If they suddenly realise this is it, that they won't be facing him much longer, they may find confidence in that fact, and re-group for the final 2 Tests. I've always believed a player should announce retirement AFTER his final match, not before.

Glen McGrath is also tipped to announce his retirement, he's had a fairly good career as well...

1250 test wickets that should be fairly easy to replace......

What about KG- how is heart going to take it? I hope Lleyton and "Macca" don't pull the pin too otherwise that would be the end of poor old KG - losing all his love children in one go! Come to think of it......

That best of Warne video is awesome. As has been said by others we are priveliged to have lived in an era where we can see someone that great. Those who saw Bradman had the same thing. Extremelly unlikely that the likes of either of those 2 will ever be seen again. To think another bowler of Warne's quality will ever exist in any of our lifetimes is fantasy. He deserves every accolade that comes his way.

Let's all hope against hope that he doesn't pull the pin.

McGill might get a couple of years now...

Id actually love to see him score a ton rather than get the 700 wickets, just so he can tick all the boxes* in his career...

I'm sure if he doesn't take that extra wicket in the remaining 2 tests he'll reconsider his retirement
