Australia's Greatest ODI Team

Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association have today confirmed that Australia’s greatest ever One-Day international team will be announced at a special Celebration of Australian One-Day Cricket Dinner on 27 February at Sydney’s Luna Park.

Australia’s greatest ever One-Day team will be voted for by every player to have represented Australia in the One-Day arena, with each player asked to nominate their greatest team of all time, in batting order. The make up the Australian One-Day cricket ‘dream team’ will be kept secret until revealed at the exclusive event.

In addition to the presentation of the greatest ever One-Day international team, every player who has played One-Day international cricket for Australia will be invited to attend and presented with their official number.

The dinner will also feature a special tribute to the 1987 World Cup winning side and will serve as the farewell to the 2007 ICC World Cup Squad as they embark on their bid to retain One-Day cricket’s greatest prize.

Having won the 1987, 1999 and 2003 ICC World Cups, there will be a large contingent of players fighting it out to be named in such exclusive company.

According to current Australian selector, Merv Hughes, “selecting the current team is a tough job, but having to select our greatest team ever will be pretty hard, especially considering we have won three World Cups.”

“Of the 160 players who have represented Australia, there are plenty who would be worthy of making this team,” Hughes said.

What does everyone think that the team should look like?

I have no idea but there are a few names I am sure will feature: Gilchrist, McGrath, Ponting, S. Waugh and Warne.

Bill Lawry did play one official ODI for memory, so is definitely eligible!

How about all those players who played World Series Cricket? I wonder whether their feats in the WSC ODI games will be considered by selectors when selecting this team?

Dont think Warne will get a spot in the 11.

Surely Michael Bevan will get in, if only for that night in Sydney.

Jason Gillespie
ODI's - 97
W - 142
BB - 5/22
Ave - 25.42
Econ - 4.21
SR - 36.22

Brett Lee
ODI's - 143
W - 255
BB - 5/22 (yes same as Dizzy)
Ave - 22.45
Econ - 4.69
SR - 28.70

You would say Brett Lee has it over Gillespie easily.

Yep, fair call, didn't realise Bings record was so impressive.

I think if one was to be really pedantic over this when comparing players, you would also want to delve into players returns against nations like Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Holland etc ...
