Redbacks stun Tigers

Matthew Elliott has guided South Australia to a thrilling three-wicket win over Tasmania in their ING Cup clash at Bellerive Oval.

Chasing 226 for victory, the Redbacks were in deep trouble at 7-192, but Elliott (40 no) and Jason Gillespie (19 not out) shared in an unbroken 35-run stand to lead the visitors home. Ferguson blasted 68 to help the Redbacks recover from a horror start.

Earlier, The Tigers were bowled out for 225 after a strong start.

After winning the toss, Tasmania moved to 61 without loss, with opener Travis Birt (45) scoring freely before becoming the first to fall.

Tim Paine and Michael Di Venuto (27) then shared in a 51-run stand as Tasmania moved to 1-112 before the Redbacks fought back. The hosts lost 4-17, with part-timer Darren Lehmann snaring the wickets of Di Venuto and David Dawson (4).

Tasmanian all-rounder Scott Kremerskothen then led a revival, top scoring with 46 for the Tigers while Adam Polkinghorne added 22 as Tasmania creeped past 200 before being bowled out.

In reply, the Redbacks were in trouble early, falling to 3-29 in the ninth over, with Adam Griffith (2-49) snaring two early scalps.

Along with Ferguson, Darren Lehmann led a recovery but when the former Test player was dismissed for 37, South Australia was 4-104.

Ferguson then started to blast away, working his way to 68 from 67 balls before falling to Shannon Tubb (1-36).

Cameron Borgas chipped in with a valuable 29 while Mark Cleary was dismissed for seven as the Tigers closed in but Elliott and Gillespie led the Redbacks home in the 49th over.

Thought the Rofe for Putland supersub was one of the more unusual decisions I have seen from Lehmann. Putland was the most economical of the bowlers at the time he went off and when Rofe came on he could only bowl 3 overs, which cost 22 runs. Fair enough wanting to bring Rofe on but why for Putland?

Good result in the end for the boys. Looked a bit shaky early when Cosgrove got a bloody ripper of delivery. I mean that was a pretty good ball. Anyway all in all, got work in the end to get the points. Elliot seems to be getting better. Things are starting to look up with FErgi getting some runs. Sitting 2nd on the ING cup table at the moment.

Well done Redbacks, I think you should pick the supersub after the toss, so that we could have had an extra bowler when we bowled.

Great to see Fergie return to some form...he's struggled his way through this season, but kudos to the SACA selectors for leaving him in the side...
