If,given the selectors role, who would you have picked, and why?

If i was a selector i'd be looking at two things. One player is a batsman who thinks he can bowl. The other is a bowler who bats Ok. If i wanted an explosive batsman i'd pick White but i wouldn't want to see him bowl at all. Given there is no other specialist spin bowler in contention i'd take Hogg though. Cameron White will be a good One Day player (not Test player) but his bowling needs a lot of work. Personally i think he should give the bowling away and concentrate on his batting.

Brad Hogg would be picked for his bowling and bowling only. On that merrit he would make the side. I don't believe Cameron White would be picked as a batsman only, that is if he didn't bowl at all he wouldn't even be considered. Why pick a batsman for his part time bowling who wouldn't normally make the side?

Want a spin bowler, pick a spin bowler. Want a part time spin bowler who bats, already have one, Michael Clarke (Roy if fit).

There is no argument from me here - Brad Hogg is the man for the spinners job. I can't really see anyone in Australia right now who is good enough to be in the Australian ODI team purely as a spin bowler:
Cullen & Bailey - too young, need more time.
MacGill - retired from the domestic ODI games but I think he should have been considered - is his ODI record really that bad that he had no chance of being considered ever again?
I predict that the spinners will have a collectively good Wolrd Cup, blokes like Vettori & Murali will flourish on the Caribbean wickets.

100% agree with what Armytank has said above.

I think Blink, Armytank and Rod_Rooster have summed things up well and I agree. I do think White could be a handy part timer in the one day matches, much the same way Symonds or Clarke are.

I'm not sure it is worthwhile playing Hogg though. I believe the 5 pace bowlers are better bowlers than he is and I'd rate Hogg's bowling on a par with Watson, except Watson can bat better. The lack of a quality spinner in our team could play against us IMO.

The only time I've really rated Hogg as a bowler is in last year's VB series. I wonder if the selectors refusal to ever try Macgill in ODI's will end up costing them a World Cup?

HOGG in before WHITE.
HOGG has done almost the unthinkable and emulated WARNES o/d performances.

I think Hogg should go to the West Indies because the selectors picked him. End of story.

Can't argue with that. Really it's hard to compare. Both players would be selected for different reasons. If Roy doesn't come good White will probably go anyway. Biggest question is how the hell did Watson get picked :?

No Doubt Hogg - White is a "spinner" that only bowls the wrong'un and Hogg is a left hander that no one has been able to pick constantly - and he can bat pretty ok also - is a good addition and needs to be in the team along with

McGrath
Lee
Bracken
Tait

as the bowling line up for the Aussies

depends on the role

the selectors were obviously looking for a bowler that can bat a little, so they went for Hogg

White, is a good clean hitter, but Punter was not confident in throwing him the ball and his chances suffered

one thing bout hoggy .. the man can field.... almost as good as roy.....

if the top order perform then his batting will not be required

one thing that will test the aussies out

seams bowlers will not intimidate while swing bowlers will
