104[122] against the mighty Australian attack EG V AU

Is he the best o/d batsman thats ever played for England :?:
Currently rated the number 1 o/d batsman in the world.
Quite a remarkable achievement for a midddle order batsman.

This is his first official innings against Australia since ooh ahh broke his rib.
Allan Border called him a teddy bear
The press made a meal of him
And he made 100 for his nation after coming in at 2/24 and all out for 247

The champion o/d batsman of the millenuim showed his talent once again.
Averages over 50 which is phenominal for a middle order batsman in o/d cricket

He is the best.

And if England lose tonight, he is largely the reason why. Batted way too slow. For him to have a strike rate of 85 is too low.

s/r 85
look at the quality of the 4 frontline bowlers who decimated EG out for 247
Sometimes stats and s/r dont paint the whole picture [R+R]
without that 100 EG would have made less than 200
slow by his standards, yes, but you play to the complexity of the game
if he fails EG are 3/25

David Gower??? His 172 against Australia at the Gabba in 82-83 was sensational one of the best one-day innings I've ever seen.

I'd prefer Ponting over Pietersen ATM. Going on form in the World Cup Hayden is the best one-day batsman in the world. Granted Pietersen is good but I'd prefer Ponting over him any day

I'd have Ponting, Clarke, Gilchrist, Hayden, Hussey and Symonds before Pietersen. Hodge too now that I think about it. Why? Each of those guys had to work hard to get into the team, fought out the tough times when they weren't getting selected and would do anything to see the team win. All of those guys go faster as their innings goes on when batting first. As long as I've got one or more of those guys at the crease in the last 10 I'm happy we'll smash a few boundaries.

I think only Haydos and Punter in current form are better than KP. The fact that we have two players better than him and KP being rated the number one player makes him overrated. The reason why he will never truly be the best is because he bats for himself.

REB

They mightn't have the talent and form, but blokes who play for the team are more valuable than blokes who don't.

HIS BATTING RUNS PER BALL DROPPED WHEN HIS TEAM-MATES KEPT GETTING OUT.
IF HE HAD SUPPORT HE WOULD HAVE BATTED QUICKER.

Great 100 by KP against the o/d world cup invincibles
If he failed they would have been all out for about 150

Have to give credit where it's due and KP batted very well last night. Best player in the world he's not but a good knock none the less.

I'm with REB and Rod on this one, yep KP is a great batsman and would walk into the Australian side ATM, but he wouldn't be the best batsman in the side so it figures he can't be the best one-day batsman in the world if he isn't the best batsman in the side...

MAL has a point in that the lack of depth in the Pommy side would have influenced his stroke play but good batsmen adapt and can still push to the singles and twos to keep it at 5-6 an over not 3-4 an over as what happened to England.

That has why Pietersen isn't the best batsman in teh world it is either full steam ahead or chuck out the anchor and shut up shop. He needs to learn to pace an innings like Ponting and Hayden does before he can be considered as good as them.

When does get going he is awesome, but no more awesome than the boy from Mowbray.

Top class internation batsmen always should have three zones for the single off every ball - Pietersen over commits himself to the front foot (for the sweep or down the ground) limiting his scoring options.

Bottom line he's good, but IMHO not the best in teh world and IMHO not as good as what Gower was....

best English batsman I've ever seen

Agreed 1980TM. Gower is the best English batsman in any form of the game that i've seen. A joy to watch.

you're not are ya!!!!

you state here that if KP fails that they are all out for 150, yet above you say the same thing but make it 200, so what is it?

next you will be saying if KP had of failed EG all out for under 100!!!!!!!!!

KP wouldnt be walking into any AUSTRALIAN side!!

scotland may take him.

PONTING + PIETERSON the best 2 batsman in o/d cricket
You cant possibly put HAYDEN in front of them
HAYDEN is having a great w/cup + a good finish to the EG/NZ games
But before that there was mooting for him being dropped.
He has never been a regular in the team [but should have been]

PONTING has been dominating o/d cricket for a decade
PIETERSON for about 2 years now

By admission I regard PONTING as the worlds best
The rankings have PIETERSON as best
The ratings as usual are very close to the mark.

Long bow to draw saying that ever run Pietersen made wouldn't have been made at all if he fails. But that's not what the argument is about. All that's being asserted is that he batted too slowly at an important time in the game, and by doing that he cost england a chance at posting a defendable total. Do you think 250 was defendable on that pitch against Australia? At the time the English commentators were hoping he would get his hundred quickly. Australia were trying to stop him getting there as long as possible, because it was plainly clear to everyone else England needed a lot more runs, and he wasn't going to make them until he made his hundred. My worst fears, and no doubt Australia's, were that he would explode in the last 7 or 8 overs, and push the poms to 280, and give themselves a chance. He never gave himself a chance, and England's chances went with his intent. I hate to see the day Australia have their number 1 batsman at the crease with 5 wickets in hand, and they don't go for it in the last half a dozen overs.
