Next test spinner

I saw the contract list on Fox and was going to post this topic before reading it mentioned in the other thread but who do you reckon will be the next spinner in the test squad?

MacGill has a terrific record and probably won't go to Zimbabwe ( if indeed Australia go at all), but I reckon the selectors should go for Hogg in the next test.
His bowling has been just as difficult for the opposition to pick than MacGills, Hogg is a superior fieldsman and batsman and they are the same age.

My vote - HOGG

Yeah, i say give hogg a go...

but i do dislike Macgill quite alot... the two young SA'ers need to do a little bit work yet IMO...

HOGG is essentially a one day bowler who gets hardly bowled for WA
The 2 SA spinners struggle to make our state side
Might as well use ROY as the spinner

That is exactly along the lines that I was thinking Mal, and it may be the plan the selectors go with because it has its merits.

It has been about 15 years since Australia's test side hasn't had at least one proper front line spinner, which is why I think MacGill will still get the nod.

People seem to forget just how good his Test record is. He is tried and proven.

That's true but he is a serious knob tho... ... does his inclusion effect the team harmony at all?

Remember that Shane Warne had lots of work to do, and barely made his state side.

While I'm not comparing Bailey and Cullen to the great man, I'd say it's worth a gamble to give them a shot.

We need them for the next decade more than we need MacGill/Hogg. And Roy is not an option as the lead spinner.

It's a whole new ball game now for the Aussies - we will miss Warney big time and find life a bit tougher bowling sides out. MacGill would have to get the first crack he has an unbelievable Test record given that he has played at the same time as the great man. Brad Hogg is good at one-dayers but I question his test credentials. As Mal said he doesn't even play for WA Pura Cup side.

Yeah you're right he only played three Shield matches last year he missed seven getting frequent flyer points in India in October. From January to March he was getting frequent flyer points around Australia mixing cordial and then playing in New Zealand and the West Indies.

When he does play Shield cricket he is first choice spinner and bats 6......

Took 16 wickets in the four innings he bowled last season in the shield.....

If you doubt me go to:

Do I think he'll get first crack at it, no, but gee I wish people wouldn't follow my lead all the time and make outlandish statements without any basis of fact......

Brad Hogg is a more than handy spin option in the Shield and he proved that last year in otherwords he is first choice spinner for WA

He's 36! Any chance of giving Dutchy (not the SAFOOTY.net poster) Holland a ring? Nah, it's Stewie until a younger bowler puts his hand up. Magill has a PROVEN strike rate in test cricket, quite often on the back of poor performances for the Blues. Magill has the TEST experience.

REB

Ive been quoted out of context

I POSTED
HOGG is essentially a o/d bowler who gets hardly bowled for WA [NEVER SAID he dosent play for WA P/C]

I MEANT
he bowls his quotas in o/d games YES
he is not the sort of bowler who always gets large amounts of overs in p/cup cricket for WA

SUMMATION
HOGG would be a risky test bowler
for every good ball he bowls a bad ball, batsman will sit on him and punish him
In o/d cricket they attack him and he gets wickets and
he has sweepers to stop the bad ball from boundaries

But I admire him as a cricketer and would love him to perform at test levl
but he is 36 years old.....

Of the 2 SA spinners BAILEY is a better bet than CULLEN
Off spinners of his calibre struggle at test level

BAILEY is a leggie so maybe could make it

AND THEY BOTH NEED A PITCH AT ADELAIDE OVAL TO SUIT THEM
NOT THE SPINNING GRAVEYARDS BEING PRODUCED LAST SEASON

My apologies I recalled an article which stated that Hogg was no longer the preferred spinner in WA's Pura Cup side but, you're right, the 2006-07 stats don't support that

Agree about the spinners graveyard Mal, but I dont think you can totally blame Les for the "spinners graveyard"- I think some blame goes to the Redbacks batsmen who didnt bat for long enough for the pitch to wear sufficiently to bring our spinners into the game....We woul often be bowling late on the first arvo!!

Not sure about Hogg- I have a feeling he would go ok and be a pretty handy batsman and fielder in the side... He doesnt bowl any more bad balls than mcgill does- probably less in fact!!

Cmon hoggy and the cullens- i dont wanna watch mcgill this summer

Be ok if Cam White could actually bowl a leg spinner.

6 wrong uns an over ain't what we need.

If we can get him bowling better he could be the answer
Needs to tell his Victorian skipper to bowl him more often ....

hence in the ODI's this year bowling half of them out the front of the hand like a med

No worries about White's batting carey - but when it comes to him bowling his "leg breaks" there is a big worry. He can't bowl them.

Bring Funky Miller out of retirement!!
