Winter Olympics 2018

Postby Corona Man » Fri Jan 26, 2018 8:34 am

The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, is a winter multi-sport event scheduled to take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, between 9–25 February 2018.

A passing interest for most I guess. Some events are good to watch, but the majority can be a little meh.

They're at it again...

Sports leaders have been accused of making "craven and spineless" decisions, after life bans given to Russian athletes were overturned.

British International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Adam Pengilly told BBC Sport he was "appalled and angry" after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) overturned the suspensions of 28 Russians for doping, and partially upheld 11 other appeals.

"It is a desperate and dark day for sport, with cheats and thieves allowed to triumph," said Pengilly.

Cas said evidence was "insufficient" to prove doping in 28 cases, though the IOC insisted the ruling did not mean the athletes would be invited to this month's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, where 169 of their compatriots are being allowed to compete as neutrals after the country was officially banned.

"Cas has failed here," said Pengilly, a former skeleton athlete who is also vice-president of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

"We need to take a long, hard look at sport's leading administrators and sport's legal system when we see the greatest fraud at an Olympic Games and years of institutional doping conspiracy pass by with only minor punishment.

"The silent and clean majority are being made to suffer through having to attain a ridiculous burden of proof and by the craven and spineless decisions of those who lead."

I see Dick Pound has come out in condemnation of the decision to allow the Ruskies to compete....

Great name that, or is it his pass-time?

Good luck to all the athletes, hope they break PBs, win lots of medals, and get laid at the athlete's village disco, but personally I couldn't give a shit about it, especially stuff like the half-pipe and other extreme 'sports'. The winter Olympics is really the snow Olympics, and we're not a nation that's big on the snow, so sometimes I wonder why we're there (apart from giving people a chance to win something as a reason to promote our national sense of sportiness).

In fact, I find it hard to care about the summer Olympics at the best of times, whose only purpose is as an excuse to discuss the topic of drugs in sport, and so this will be even less of a blip on my radar.

Apparently it's actually one of those Frenchy-type surnames, with a silent 'd' at the end and the 'ou' diphthong pronounced as an 'oo'.

It will be something different to watch other than womens AFL, and the AFLX. A decent enough distraction for me while we await the real stuff at the end of March.

Yes good point.... however the time difference is something like 8 or 9 hours. So being a wuss, I will only make it through until the lunch break before I am asleep on the couch.

I said to my missus yesterday that I'm more 'into' this winter olympics than others. I've realised why - it's because it's on at our viewing times. I do enjoy some of the sports (not all) and I've missed it to a certain extent - given that the previous games have been overnight our time.

As an armchair expert watching Men's Aerials for the first time, reckon a bit of rigged judging saw the Aussie knocked out by a Japanese bloke who didn't stick a landing

Olympic athlete from Russia. What a joke!
Why bother with a watered down penalty for continual drug cheating.

You can’t even win gold when you use performance enhancing drugs in CURLING!!! I’d be having a chat to my supplier.
