Highs and lows

Winter and Summer

Highs and lows

Postby JAS » Sun Aug 24, 2008 6:26 pm

Well that's almost it for another 4 years or 2 if, like me, you also enjoy the Winter Olympics just as much.

So what were your highs and lows of the Games...just your own personal view...can be any event, any team... :D

For me....

Highs
The opening ceremony...regardless of special effects...they're in everything now so why not this too.
Anything with Usain Bolt...and Michael Johnsons reaction to it.
Anything with Phelps.
The young GB girl winning a medal in the windsurfing, bawling her eyes out and saying how happy she was.
Chris Hoy winning 3 gold...first Brit since 1908.
Croatia coming to rescue of the Dutch in the sailing by lending them a boat.
Mitcham's final dive.
The chaos in the Men's Modern Pentathlon showjumping...no one or horses were hurt so it was good to have some comedy.
That softball match between Aus and Japan.

Lows
The Opening Ceremony...replacing the child that sang because she wasn't pretty enough...cruel...both the act and publicising it.
The trouble in the Taekwondo.
Some of the tv coverage/presenters...could have been greater diversity and less reruns especially those shown as allegedly live.
GB relay teams.
The Chinese hurdler having to withdraw injured in front of his home crowd.
Probably some more but can't think of any.

Regards

Highs

Hooker, the Aussie pole vaulter, fantastic effort to get gold
Usain Bolt
Australia defeating Lithuania in the basketball
the American track relay teams
the Aussie girls in the triathlon
the big German weightlifter

lows

probably not too many off the top of my head
maybe the performance of the top track relay teams but that did open it up for other teams to get a shot at glory

I think the gold goes to you though for some mammoth score posting sessions...sorry I wasn't more help.

JAS

P.S. One extra low for me...only just seen it on tv on the highlights.
A wrestler annoyed at only getting the Bronze threw his medal to the floor and stormed off the podium...disgrace bad sportsmanship...was kicked out of the games apparently.

The Marathon. To have a guy break the pack by relentless 3min kms, for 41 kilometres straight, until he had a break going into the stadium, was unbelievable. Did the Olympic record by three minutes in a race where no-one was supposed to break 2.12, let alone 2.09.

the low was the number of ads that Seven put in the last 25 mins of the race.

the Saturday night distance finals back to back to back, followed by the 400m relays, was also an amazing night of track. Pity we saw pretty much no field events in OZ for the entire Olympics.

My two favourite events in the Olympics have always been the platform diving and the pole vault. I never dreamed for a second that Australia would win gold in both events, so they are easily the highs for me.

Usain Bolt left me breathless with anticipation after seeing him run his first heat in the 100 metres. You could tell he was something special.

The level of excellence from the Chinese divers and gymnasts is something I will never forget. That exhibition put on by the Chinese trampoling team was stunning, I had no idea the human body could perform deeds of such a high and spectacular level.

I was disappointed the women's hockey team missed out on a medal.

Not too many lows, and not really worth commenting on as the Olympics are great. Pity they only happen every 4 years.

I was just pleased to have the Olympics screened into my living room, so I have no complaints in that area. I think the major complaints must be coming from younger posters who are used to having everything laid on for them at the press of a button. They need to go back to the days of Mexico 1968 and Munich 1972 when we were just grateful for anything we could get ... and rarely saw Australia win anything!!!

My only complaint was that effort called Yum Cha in which the media once again couldn't resist the temptation to insult the intelligence of the viewer. One of these days the media will understand we are not idiots, and are looking to our commentators to provide information, not dumb blonde acts. Their treatment of the two girls from synchronised swimming was embarrassing, and whether you like the sport or not, those girls deserved just as much respect that was saved for medal winners.

Add the closing ceremony to my highs too...looking almost as good as the Opening...

...even if our presenters did just say 'instead of the silver bells dancers London could have 1500 pearly kings and queens'  mmmmm...they could all sing 'Chim chiminey chim chim cheroo' too I suppose.

Lows - the Cuban Taekwondo champ - ain't no Angel kicking the referee
The silence in the Bird's Nest after the Hurdle champ broke down, could have cut the silence with a knife.
No Bruce or Burnsy in the Olyroos - shame Arnold shame

Highs - Phelps and Bolt - how could anyone separate them, going to be around for a long time to come.
THAT DIVE - to stop a Chinese cleansweep.
Hot Rice - Go Steph
The walker - Tallent - gets married this weekend at Walkerville. To walk 70km's and win 2 medals in that heat.
Hooker in the Pole Vault - just manages to scrape into the final and then walks away with a Gold Medal and Olympic record.
Sally McLellan in the hurdles.
The German Weighlifter - brought a tear to my eye.
Anna Meares - to even make the Olympics was unbelievable after her accident 7 months ago which almost left her as a quadraplegic.

The Hockey Teams did disappoint these Olympics, but they will be back better and stronger in four years.

Add the Lightning Bolt, The German Weightlifter, Anna Meares and The Winner of the Mens Marathon to the Highs.

Add the Costa Rican guy, The coverage and The BMX and Synchronised Swimming to the Lows.
