Opening Ceremony

Well I'm not usually a fan of opening or closing ceremonies, but my 10yo son suggested we get up at 5am to watch and we were not dissappointed.

Whilst the British have been known to be stuffy in the past there was no evidence of this with the ceremony embracing the new as well as the old: Led Zeppelin, Mary Poppins, coal mines, David Beckham, the NHS, a Mini Cooper and even Mr. Bean. It all seemed to go as planned and was finished off with an amazing rendition of Hey Jude by Sir Paul McCartney complete with an audience sing-a-long.

FANTASTIC! :ymapplause:

Now all they need to do is to move the couldren from the middle of the stadium. Can have it where it is when the field events going on.

I came in on it as the teams were being marched in. Missed Australia's entry but got the rest. I'm sorry I missed the first couple of hours but the remainder was awesome. Easily killed off Beijing's effort IMHO. The whole flame thing was breathtaking and as you say fish, McCartney's piece was pretty good. I was thinking how pissed off Elton would have been not to be invited to perform!
Also, there should be an award for the most ridiculous uniform and headwear. Some were just awful.

Can we let Muhammad Ali be? Embarrassing to keep rolling him out for each Olympics.

Put the chair in neutral at the top of a hill and he'd be half a chance.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought the Queen looked so happy to be there!

Yeah ... a smile would have been nice.

Ali is the greatest but his time was Atlanta in 1996, let him be.

A long tribute to British Music but no Elton ... I'm not a big fan but that seemed deliberate.

There were my only minor issues, I really liked the fact they took the mickey out of a couple of things.

Becks bringing the torch up the river was cool and I wonder how many people did their dough on who would light the couldron.

As for the couldron itself, very symbolic all the countries coming together as one. And like a wedding cake everyone gets to take a piece home afterwards.

There's always the closing ceremony Phil! He (and Cliff) may make an appearance in that...

Finally watched it on download, haven't been able to get to a TV. Can you believe the bloody Canadian broadcast cut to an ad just as the Aussies came in!
