Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso faces a wait to learn how long he will be out injured.

The 27-year-old Spaniard, who signed from Liverpool for £30m in the summer, injured his right ankle during Real's 5-2 UEFA Champions League victory over FC Zurich on Tuesday.
The injury came as he slipped trying to challenge Johan Vonlanthen in midfield, with Fernando Gago eventually coming on in his place in the 59th minute.
But Real's doctors say it is still "impossible" to know how long Alonso will be out for as the inflammation has not reduced and the player now faces new medical tests in Madrid to ascertain the extent of his injury.

Champions Barcelona maintained their perfect start to the campaign with a 5-2 thrashing of Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou.
Barcelona raced into a four goal lead, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic opening the scoring after just two minutes, Lionel Messi adding a second on 16 minutes, Dani Alves a third on 31 minutes and Seydou Keita the fourth three minutes before the interval.
Sergio Aguero then pulled one back for the visitors on the stroke of half-time and Diego Forlan added a second six minutes from the end before Messi completed the rout with his second deep into injury time.
The defeat leaves Atletico languishing second from bottom in the table.

Messi set for new deal

Argentine set to become best paid player at Barca. Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is set to sign an improved contract with the European champions.
The 22-year-old Argentina international already has a deal with the Catalan side that runs until 2014, but the new contract will make him the best paid player at the club.

According to the press over here, he will be on anything from £180k to £240k a week   that equates to $480k, an unbelieveable amount of money.

Unbelievable that whilst th club is in so much debt, a new budget for even more is set

Real reveal massive debt

Summer spending leaves club in 'delicate' situation

Real Madrid have announced that their debt has risen to £296million (327million euros) following a summer of lavish spending.
The Spanish giants embarked on a phenomenal rebuilding project during the transfer window which saw many of the world's top players arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Club president Florentino Perez, who was appointed in June, helped bring in the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso.

The summer spending totalled £226million (250million euros) but it has resulted in massive debt.

However, Real appear to have lost none of their appetite for spending, with the annual assembly also approving a new record budget of £381million (422million euros) for the current season.

Racing Santander 1 - 4 Barcelona

Review

Barcelona moved back to the top of the table on Tuesday while Sevilla's recent return to form continued.
Barcelona made light work of their trip to Racing Santander, easing to a 4-1 victory on the road.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic put Pep Guardiola's men on their way after 20 minutes, before Lionel Messi doubled their advantage four minutes later.
Gerard Pique added a third after 27 minutes and Messi grabbed his second of the night just after the hour mark to complete a comfortable night's work for the Catalan giants.
Oscar Serrano did pull one back for the hosts after 73 minutes but it was far too little, far too late.

Racing remain locked in mid-table after suffering their second defeat in four outings.

Sevilla's recent return to form continued on Tuesday as they climbed into third spot in the table.
The men from Andalusia secured a third straight win as they saw off Real Mallorca 2-0 on home soil.
Sebastien Squillaci opened the scoring after 17 minutes, heading home after Mallorca failed to clear their lines from a corner.
Diego Perotti then wrapped up the points on 26 minutes when he met a Jesus Navas cross to nod past Dudu Aouate.
Mallorca had been unbeaten heading into the game, but slip out of the top four as a result of their midweek setback.

Villarreal have made a surprisingly poor start to the new season, failing to win any of their opening three games, and the last thing they would have wanted in such a situation was a match against Real Madrid.
But Real were in ruthless mood as they clinched their fourth consecutive victory thanks to an early breakaway goal from Cristian Ronaldo and a late Kaka penalty, while Gonzalo Rodriguez was sent off for Villarreal.

Athletic Bilbao have been the surprise package of the season so far with three successive wins but their good form ground to a halt with a 1-0 loss to Tenerife.
The game looked like it would end as a goalless draw but Mikel Alonso popped up three minutes from time to steal the points for Tenerife.

Valencia took the lead against Getafe through David Villa on 22 minutes but they went on to lose 3-1.
Manu Del Moral struck twice (24 and 38) to turn the game in Getafe's favour and Pedro Leon scored from the penalty spot in the 69th minute to seal the win.

Atletico Madrid remain without a victory this term following an entertaining 2-2 draw with Almeria at Vicente Calderon.
Pablo Piatti fired Almeria ahead on 26 minutes before Cleber Santana equalised two minutes later and Diego Forlan made amends for an earlier missed penalty by putting Atletico in front.
They held onto their 2-1 advantage until Piatti grabbed his second of the evening with just one minute remaining to salvage a point for Almeria.

Bottom club Xerez suffered a fourth straight defeat as they went down 3-0 at home to Deportivo La Coruna.
Juca and Riki found the target for Deportivo and they also were helped by an own goal from Leandro Gioda.

Osasuna bounced back from two successive losses with a 2-1 win over nine-man Real Valladolid, who had Luis Prieto and Cesar Arzo dismissed.
Walter Pandiani's opener on 25 minutes was cancelled out by Diego Costa just after the interval but Osasuna struck again through Jorge Galan 17 minutes from time.

Espanyol came from behind to beat Malaga after Fernando Miguel had broken the deadlock for the visitors in the 28th minute.
Ben Sahar drew Espanyol level 10 minutes into the second half and Ivan Alonso proved to be the match-winner after 80 minutes.

Thurs 24th Sep

Sporting Gijon 1 - 1 Real Zaragoza

Sporting Gijon and Real Zaragoza drew 1-1 at El Molinon in the Primera Liga on Thursday night.
Gimenez Diego Castro had put the home side in front, but Abel Aguilar replied to leave honours even.
The result was far from ideal for both sides after slow and inconsistent starts to the campaign have left the two clubs in the bottom half of the table.
Diego Castro broke the deadlock in the 29th minute to give Gijon the lead, but they could not hold on for the three points.
Aguilar replied nine minutes after the half-time interval and the score remained the same at the final whistle.

Mallorca continued their positive start to the season with a 3-0 home win over struggling Valladolid.
The islanders moved into the fourth and final UEFA Champions League place after goals from Jose Carlos Nunes, Aritz Aduriz and Borja Valero handed them an easy win.

A 56th minute Javad Nekounam penalty was enough for Osasuna to see off lowly Sporting Gijon at home.

Meanwhile Espanyol and Xerez could not be separated at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat with both teams failing to find the net.
Espanyol stay ninth while Xerez remain bottom despite picking up their first point of the season.

Almeria needed a last minute Kalu Uche strike for them to grab a share of the spoils at home to Racing Santander.
Albert Crusat had given Almeria the lead (17) but two second-half goals from Mohammed Tchite (59) and Mehdi Lacen (71) turned the game in Santander's favour only for Uche to steal a point.
The result means Almeria drop to 12th while Santander rise a place to 15th.

Barcelona and Real Madrid maintained their 100 per cent starts to the season as Sevilla ran riot at Athletic Bilbao.
Though the Spanish season may only be five games old, Barcelona and Real already appear to be gearing up for a mammoth title battle.

Reigning champions Barcelona kept up their perfect start to the campaign with a comfortable 2-0 success away to lowly Malaga.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who started the game on the bench due to concerns over his fitness, opened the scoring on 39 minutes after coming on for the injured Thierry Henry.
Former Manchester United defender Gerard Pique increased the lead just before the hour mark when he turned home Xavi's free-kick.
Malaga finished the game with 10 men when ex-Newcastle United flop Albert Luque was sent off for a foul on Daniel Alves.

Karim Benzema grabbed a second-half brace as Real moved on to 15 points after a 3-0 win at home to Tenerife.
Summer signing Benzema opened the scoring two minutes after half-time by heading home Xabi Alonso's corner and then doubled the lead on 58 minutes.
Tenerife hit the post through Omar Ramos before Kaka crashed home Real's third goal in the 77th minute.

Sevilla remain third in the standings after romping to a 4-0 win at Bilbao, whose season has come off the rails in the past week.
Renato's free-kick put Sevilla ahead after just five minutes and Alvaro Negredo increased the advantage on 21 minutes after being played in by Diego Capel.
Negredo then hit the bar before his parried attempt allowed fellow striker Fredi Kanoute to make it 3-0 at the end of the first half.
Bilbao had Fernando Amorebieta sent off for a second yellow card 10 minutes after half-time before Negredo set up Jesus Navas to score Sevilla's fourth goal 15 minutes from time.

Atletico Madrid are still awaiting a first win of the season, but grabbed an injury-time equaliser to draw 2-2 at Valencia.
Argentine ace Sergio Aguero put Atletico ahead after just seven minutes after he was played in by strike partner Diego Forlan.
But Valencia drew level on 25 minutes when Pablo scored and two minutes later David Silva fed David Villa to put the hosts ahead.
Villa hit the post in the second half before Atletico substitute Maxi Rodriguez fired home a low shot in the second mintute of stoppage-time.

Ujfalusi fined for contract breach

Atletico ace must pay for opting against Sevilla deal

Tomas Ujfalusi has been ordered to pay €875,000 plus costs for breaking his pre-contract agreement with Sevilla. The Czech Republic defender agreed to join the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan outfit only to turn his back on the club.

Ujfalusi, who was out of contract at Fiorentina in the summer of 2008, opted instead to join Atletico Madrid on a free transfer. Sevilla took the 31-year-old to court and won with the stopper now having to pay £800,000 for breaching his contract.

Ujfalusi, who can appeal the fine, helped Atletico finish fourth in the Liga table last season, while Sevilla finished third.

CHYGRYNSKIY OUT FOR THREE WEEKS

Barcelona defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy has been ruled of action for around three weeks after suffering ligament damage in his left knee, the European champions have confirmed.

The Ukraine international, a 25million euro signing from Shakhtar Donetsk this summer, sustained the injury during Saturday night's 2-0 win over Malaga.

Striker Thierry Henry also picked up an injury during the match, damaging his left thigh, and he is rated as a serious doubt for Tuesday's Champions League game against Dynamo Kiev.

Copa Del Ray 5th Round

Holders Barcelona crashed out of the Copa del Rey despite a 1-0 victory away to Sevilla in the second leg of their fifth round meeting.
Trailing 2-1 from the first leg at Camp Nou, Pep Guardiola's side levelled the tie on aggregate thanks to Xavi's 64th minute effort, but could not break down the hosts again and crashed out on the away goals rule.

Deportivo La Coruna hit back from 2-0 down at home to Valencia to secure a 4-3 aggregate success.
Nikola Zigic struck twice in the opening 28 minutes for the visitors to give them a narrow advantage after a 2-1 home defeat in the first leg.
But Luis Filipe responded in the 49th minute for Deportivo before Juan Rodriguez made sure of their progress to the quarter-finals.

Osasuna scraped past second division Hercules on the away goals rule after Massoud Shojaei scored a fine solo effort to secure a 1-0 victory on the night and a 2-2 aggregate scoreline.

Alcorcon's Copa del Rey adventure came to an end as they were edged out by Racing Santander following a 0-0 stalemate in the second leg.
The third-tier outfit, who saw off Real Madrid in the last round, exited the competition as a result of their 3-2 defeat in the first meeting.

Getafe secured their place in the last eight with a 6-3 aggregate success over Malaga following a stunning 5-1 second leg victory.
Trailing 2-1 from their first meeting, the home side overturned the deficit and moved ahead thanks to first-half goals from Roberto Soldado Rillo and Lopez Rafa.
And they completed a memorable victory with further goals after the break from Soldado Rillo and Leon, with Jiminez Juanmi's 63rd-minute response merely academic as Dani Parejo grabbed a fifth for the hosts.

He really wasn't up to the standard last season.

There was a good centre pread in the Advertiser yesterday regarding the regional divisions in Spain. I don't think many people in Aus realise how divided the country really is.

Even though the WC win helps bring some unity, there is still loads of talk about star performers Fabregas, Puyol and Inniesta being from Catalunya, while Casillas and Torres are Castillian.

Apparently there was a court ruling in Spain recently declaring that Catalunya was not allowed to refer to itself as a nation.

All politics aside, La Liga is great IMO. I really enjoy watching the few games get.
