The World Game

England weren’t great for the first 20 or so minutes but still have a 2-0 lead at the break.
France absolutely dismantled Poland and 3-1 probably wasn’t a fair reflection of the game

Glorious watching Brazil destroy the South Koreans. Putting on a clinic.
The cream on top after seeing Japan lose on pens.
Barring an upset tomorrow we will see 6 Euro and 2 South American sides in the last 8

Morocco defeat Spain on pens. Absolute scenes in Doha and a unbelievable win.
Portugal up 4-1 over the Swiss so one of Portugal or Morocco will be in the final 4

How good if Adelaide United make Asian Champions League and we draw Ronaldo's team in the same group...
Game will need to be played at Adelaide Oval.....unless the AFL decided to move a game to Wednesday night

Came across as a little sook, looking miserable on the bench. They showed they don’t rely on him anymore they way they played anyway.

Croatia stunned Brazil on a penalty shootout lol,
surely there HAS to be a better way to decide a match?
It comes down to luck?
Also, Croatia population 4 million,
Australia population 25 million,
we must be doing something very wrong.

Football is the number 1 sport in Croatia, they live and die for it and for many Croatians it is the most important thing in life.
In Australia it’s so far down the pecking list so it’s remarkable to achieve what we have even though I’d love us to to better.
Have a look at all the countries that get to the pointy end of tournaments and they are all countries who live and breathe football.
If we are going by your theory of population than China and India should be superpowers yet both don’t even make it to the World Cup

I'd say we're doing a hell of a lot right even to reach the WC.

Do Croatians have;

Basketball
Baseball
Aussie rules
Rugby Union
Rugby League
Tennis

competing against them for 'time' in a time poor society.

Then also having the persona/reputation of soccer being a 'soft' sport? I doubt it.

In Australia, you're going to have a comparison between rugby, soccer and Aussie Rules.

Is it a worthwhile exercise financially for Australians to send your kids into soccer? I know friends of ours have two boys, one plays Aussie rules ($250 per year) vs soccer (^$1000 per year) and when I ask about how they feel about 'the club' they don't feel tied to it at all. It seems very transactional to them.

What I'd say is - do we have the best sportsman playing soccer? I'd suggest not. Hence the problem.

You get the feeling the Argies are FIFA’s preferred winners of the Cup, but getting past the Croatian’s won’t be easy (naturally, being a Semi). Think Argentina beating the French in the final looks most likely, but I’ve made a lot of bad calls in the Cup so far so wtf do I know?!?

Pretty shonky stuff putting an Argentinian panel of refs in charge of the Portugal game.

Love the World concept and do watch a few games, the EG V FA game a snorter
Just a pity we have to wait 4 years for the tournaments
