Edwardstown advertised for coaches yesterday. This is in there constitution that they advertise every year.

The thing that stood out is A,B,C grade and under 18.

The SAAFL has no under 18 comp next year. It is under 17 and under 19

Ahh but does metro south have an U18s comp?? Might be the reason why they did not put their affiliated league in the paper because the U18s comp is a totally different league?? Also a page or so ago alot of those clubs that were mentioned as possible targets for the SFL have been affiliated with the SAAFL or other leagues for a very long time and i'd highly doubt they will budge, no doubt because for a div 5-7 SAAFL club to jump up say SFL div 2 would be a fair risky assignment. Not to mention the Mitcham,CLG,Kenilworths,Unleys,PHOS Camden and especially college sides such as SHOC and Scotch have had a very succesful history in the SAAFL and from what I can gather seem pretty happy where they are.

Colleges and PHOS agreed; The others bar, Mitcham are not exactly brimming with recent success might relish the change. Also, you some of the clubs listed might have played in the old Glenelg South league that disbanded in the early 80's. Willunga left the SFL after 99 years in the mid eighties.
Where's Bill? Yeah... Hmm... Bill is on the Villa Quatro, on the road to Salina. I will draw you a map.

It is pure wishful thinking though, I can guarentee at least 2 of those clubs you mentioned never have and never will step foot in the SFL. Also seeing how lop-sided the SFL is why would they want to risk their clubs future?? If anything I can see the SFL getting smaller over the next few years.Hey if a club such as Edwardstown wants to leave and go to the SFL does that leave an opening for Morphettville Park, Marion or Brighton to join the SAAFL in their place?? They have made queries over recent times and surely could not be ruled out.....

Agreed the SFL is in a precarious state; if the original or chicken twisties left, the other would follow; adding pressure to the remaining clubs occupying positions outside the top six. In addition, add Aldinga and Lonsdale to the list of clubs who have seriously investigated leaving the SFL.

Both leagues are far from perfect as alluded to in earlier posts; leaving the possibility of someone in either the SFL, SAAFL, or even jointly, to deliver a better solution for southern clubs that provides atmosphere, low affiliation costs, close proximity (and rivalry) between clubs, supportive measures for attracting and maintaining juniors, and greater parity between divisional rivals.

I guess it is wishful thinking that one of our league administrators can produce said league; but I'd rather be an optimist.

SFL provides more of an opportunity to cover costs on matchday with Juniors before the game and bigger crowds. It's not unrealistic to see clubs have a $10,000 turnover during a big day. Would the 250 people that go to a big Edwardstown clash fork out anywhere near this?

Add to that the Junior's playing before the seniors have a bit more loyalty to the club when they see guys out their week in week out. This would reduce the amount of recruiting clubs would have to do and lower the cost of player payments.

Cost of everything is rising at the moment including petrol so a trip over the hill with the expressway would have to be more appealing than a trip out to TTG.

I'd be interested to know when Lonsdale are supposed to have seriously investigated leaving the SFL. Is this from a reliable source?

2006; Senior committee member of the club. I must say though, I thought then, and do now; Lonsdale are out of luck with the SFL; smack bang between two powerhouse clubs and too far (in my opinion) from the boundaries of any other league (hills, GSFL, SAAFL). The high school closing is just a whole load of salt. Should've stayed at the beach (far better oval);

I can't see them lasting more than three years unless the SFL does something drastic like restrict teams to one junior team per grade. It's a pity, they seemed like a reasonable bunch of blokes.

Guess I must have slept through that meeting.

Staying at O'Sullivan's Beach was never going to work with the soccer club managing the complex.

Sub-juniors are slowly growing and if the poachers up the road can be kept at bay there will be juniors next year as well.

Edwarstown going to the SFL is a capitulation.

SAAFL div 1 is recognised as the best standard of football outside of the SANFL by a longshot.

By leaving, Edwardstown is saying "we don't believe we can't be on of the top football clubs in SA".

Off you go to the SFL Edwardstown, to be a big fish in a little pond.

not such a little pond shrek. Yes, it is a lopsisded competition at the moment, but now there should be 7 - 8 high standard teams, with a few not far behind at all (including the improving Noarlunga, Morphy parks, Aldinga and Christies who could all be a force next year) EFC moving is good news for the SFL!!

I know this is rare, but I agree with you there AFLflyer.

A good extra team will add another quality game to the season which in turn may attract more players to the league.

Can only be good.
