damian wrote:An interesting article here, my question to you posters on here - Is the Brownlow losing it's credability? And is it the umpires we blame? I say yes to both.
Although other awards aren't as huge in the media, i think they hold more credability. Awards like the AFL Players association award (voted on by AFL players) and the Lou Richards Medal (awarded by men that know a little bit about football). Not many people ever disagree with these awards, they are voted on by people that know what they are doing.
Vote's don't add up as Brownlow fails to sort the GOODES from the bad
THE round five match against Geelong did not get off to a good start for Adam Goodes. He slipped, slid and fell repeatedly before having to go off and change his boots.
Things just seemed to get worse from there.
Goodes managed 14 possessions for the game, took only two marks and made five tackles but was forced to watch as Jimmy Bartel, (27 possessions, 10 tackles, 2 goals), Steve Johnson (22 possessions, 4 goals) and Gary Ablett (35 disposals, 3 goals) blew the Swans off Skilled Stadium.
After the match, Swans coach Paul Roos delivered an unusual broadside at his player.
"Goodesy has struggled again and that's a massive concern," Roos said.
"You get 35 (touches) and three goals from Gary Ablett and probably our key player, our best player, has a really bad day. It makes it really difficult on the other players and Goodesy knows that part of being a good player is that responsibility."
Roos complained that he had to shift Goodes around to try to get him into the game. But what would Paul Roos know about good football?
If the Brownlow is any guide, Goodes must have had a blinder. OK, so Ablett got the three votes and Joel Selwood one, but the umpires gifted Goodes two whole Brownlow votes -- just imagine how many he would have got had he played well. By the way, Johnson and Bartel did not rate a nod. Maybe, you might think, the umpires were giving a charity vote to a Swans side that had its score doubled by the Cats.
Well, maybe, but if that is the case Brett Kirk (23 possessions, 6 marks, 7 tackles) might have got a look in or even Jarrad McVeigh, who did almost as well.
Goodes is a fine player, without doubt. He is a worthy winner of two Brownlow medals and one of eight in the history of the game to have a double set (four players have three), but there is no doubt that some players attract votes and others repel them.
Ron Barassi, Leigh Matthews, Gary Ablett (senior and junior). Royce Hart, John Nicholls, Alex Jesaulenko and Wayne Carey are among many champion players who never got to take Chas home.
"Clearly there are guys who play a reasonable game and get votes and there are guys who play exceptional games and get votes," Roos said yesterday.
"If you look at the history of the medal there are significant vote catchers and some guys who don't get votes at all."
Goodes, who was ineligible this year, scored 21 votes on Monday night, nine clear of Kirk who was next best at the Swans.
You can be sure the club's best and fairest voting does not reflect the umpires' view.
Last year Geelong's Bartel won the Brownlow. It apparently raised the bar so high he could not live up to the standards he set.
Or perhaps something happened in the summer break that made him invisible to the umpires.
In round 18, Bartel had a regulation 32 touches, 8 tackles and kicked a couple of goals. Round 21 was spectacular by even his standards with 37 touches, including 11 marks. Bartel, according to the Brownlow broadcaster, had leather poisoning that round as he got a big donut from the umpires for both efforts.
Possession might be nine tenths of the law, but possession is apparently not always nine tenths of a Brownlow vote. Bartel only managed 10 votes in 2008.
And the lesson is? Get your money on Goodes next year and pray he doesn't get rubbed out or injured like he did this year.

Rightly or wrongly in the AFL nothing will EVER mean more than the brownlow medal, its the most decorated individual honour in Australia. Yes, umpires do make some interesting selections at times, but on the whole they are around the mark. this tradition will never die and always be the holy grail of sports awards in this country.
between the three field umpires surely they can make resasonable decisions. I wonder if they get use of stats from each match, i think this could cloud their decisions more than help them?
