Postby lion heart » Wed Mar 25, 2009 12:19 pm

Who is keen to see it return?

Should it return to original format?

Should we play GSFL instead?

Should we continue with SAAFL asssociation game that no one is interested in? (BORING)

Bring it back- the amateur league game is a token match with no rivalry attached.

Plus it would give some of us bragging rights over other on the forum!

You'll find the SFL Directors want it back as badly as all of us. It has been out of their hands. Two of the other Leagues decided to go it alone and there was nothing the SFL could do about it.
By the way, Southern was not doing all that well in the Lovelock's later years. The side that was dominating was the GSFL.
Different story in the two Colts Shields though. SFL was winning them all the time.

How long did the Lovelock Shield go for? Does anyone have a rundown of the winners each year?

Would have to do some checking back, which I don't have tme to do right now.
However GSFL dominated the last six or seven years. Before that River Murray, Hills and Southern were almost even in three-way battle for most wins.
GSFL was catching up rapidly when the whole thing collapsed.

What was the Comp called that used to get played up in the Riverland over 2 days? Think it was last played in 2004.

Hey boys, Lovelock Shield was created when Hills, River Murray and Great Southern were genuine Country Leagues and Southern was alot more country than it is now. If we are going to play Association Games against those leagues fine, but Lovelock Shield should be retired based on the principal it was created upon. I can't really see the point playing Association footy against those leagues when most of the best players from all 4 leagues live in suburban Adelaide. What does this prove to the winner and loser. With all leagues presumably now using the points system then maybe one solution is that only 1 point players can be selected. This will generally mean that the player has come through that leagues juniors or has been in that league for long enough to be considered a loyal player of club and league. This will be a more genuine representation of that Leagues talent and development of players. If a 2 point player is ineligible this year then he becomes eligible the next year when he is a 1 point player.

Theres no denying the players want the Lovelock Shield concept brought back. In what way im not sure.

With peoples interests changing and the clubs 'owning' players these days a little bit like the AFL there are certain clubs that discourage their better players from putting their bodies on the line for anything but their team.

I for one love association footy. U meet great people, build relationships with people you otherwise wouldnt get the opportunity to as you are opponents all year etc etc.

Whether its done on the Saturday, maybe in a format of shortened 2x20 min halves (like the South Adelaide Carnival) with a final played that night or something?

At the moment we know the association weekend is broken, lets hope the league heads get together and fix it!

You have said it all BJ....in your first point
The Lovelock shield will not happen again. Clubs have too much self interest in their players.

The question is being put to the SFL presidents at their next meeting with the league, according to the agenda anyway.

Do the players want to play these games? If it is against the SAAFL or the GSFL if the players don't support it why play it. I think attitudes of players have changed over the years, I still think it is a great honor to be picked but most of the team would be on some sort of contract at there local club and I know the clubs would be worried about them getting injured. It sounds selfish but when a player signs a contract at your club and then gets hurt playing a game that your not paying him to play it can wreck the rest of the year for that player and his club.
