As good as backy is he has been injured a lot during his time in sfl. Vick has been a long time servant for cove and same as Todd johnstone from Brighton I can't believe they both haven't won 3 each. I think if backy had stayed relatively injury free and I would agree with you. Def a great player but Vick just demolishes teams

I can't pick between a whole batch of them, and Vick is most definitely one of them. Jolly and Fishlock are definitely two others.
I always thought of Jolly --- "looks like Potter, plays like Potter, and is probably as good as Potter". However if I had a gun to my head demanding I make a pick of all players I've seen in SFL I'd probably end up going with Wayne Potter, but I wouldn't be betting that I was right.

On Corbett and Branson- even five sides means you have to be best of 100 to bag the medal. It doesn't matter if there were five teams, two teams, or 568 teams, my mail is that these two guys were colossal. The way some of the oldtimers used to talk about Branson he was really something.

Bachman beat Vick for the medal only playing 11 games surely he is better than Vick...

Still think Vick is better, better at getting a hard ball and plays in a better team than Bachman which makes it harder to get votes.. Bachman top plaYer but Vick is the better.

So what you are saying is anyone finishing higher in any medal count must be a better footballer

Jerry Mott, Baden Taylor, Allan Twigden, Paul Crate, Barry Pilmore, Wayne Potter, Bernie Veide, Theres some names from the 80s

What about the Plympton boys from that era BPT would you include any of them, 3 premierships and run

Trevor Potts would go close as coach

What about Richard Croser from Willunga, I believe he won 3 mail medals in the 60/70's.
If you were looking at Plympton players you would look at Paul Long, Steve Talbot, Brenton Salisbury (better than his brother).

Pottsy may be close but I am sure that the coaches in the early days with multiple premierships will also be considered.

Must come under serious consideration.

How about this pair from nearly 100 years ago ? ---
M.Corbett ---- SIX Mail Medals --- must have been able to play a bit
Ron Branson --- about the same era (Twenties) ---- they reckon he was absolutely awesome (triple Medallist)
How are they ever going to line all these guys up ?

Ron Branson played three seasons with West Adelaide in the 30s as well.

Agree with all of these PA !! :D What a great bunch of footballers !!!!
Also agree with Potts ---- the number of sides he took top should make him very close to the best
That Plympton side was utterly awesome. Only with us three years, but they totally dominated. Got to have a number of contenders. The best I can remember are Steve Talbot, Brenton Salisbury, Kym Nadebaum

Shane Bradshaw is a gun (2010 all australian) must be in the side.

Talbot, Long , Nadebaum , Salisbury , Harby , Morgan all guns in that Plympton side.

Milo would be a chance in this era especially if you are including Hibberd as Milo has proven he can play back as well as forward.

I wasn't having a go at you Head over it, I appreciate what your list was about, it was just an observation. I don't know enough of the history of the SFL to put any names forward but there must be some defenders worthy of a mention, I am sure some will come up. The difficulty of this exercise is to compare current day players with those of 100 years ago. Still makes an interesting discussion.

In this eras defenders it is hard to look past
Gaskin - Emus
Tedmanson - Pt Noarl.
Smith - Emus
Heath - Cove
Mckenzie -Valley

Dont know how they stand up against the past but they are the better defenders that have played/play recently.
Any others??

Bradshaw certainly should be mentioned, great HBF.

Milo should be mentioned also as he is a very good player, but maybe playing in different positions makes it hard to put him against blokes that have made there positions their craft.

I put Hibberd in my original post as I was looking through the leading goal kicker awards on the SFL website (and mainly going on stats)
Milo as a forward was as good if not better than hibberd but never led the league in goalkicking, and hibberd did 3 times.
Now that you mention it tho I did forget that he kicked a couple of tons in a row (something that Hibberd never did) and was probably unlucky to get pipped by Pollard for the Leading goalkicker on several occasions. so moreso an oversite by me when getting names from the leading goalkicker list.

As a HBF he was also very good but once again there were other HBF going around at the time that were just as good. (Bradshaw being one) and milo only played HBF off and on for a few years didnt he?

Mckenzie is a great defender. Big Log Smith is a great defender and Craig Smith also a great defender. John Bourke from Plympton was one of the best full back's I have seen in the SFL.

I know we don't and won't have many but I'd put Max Eddy and Mark Knowles forward for from Morphy Parks.
