I definately see your point woodublieve. Maybe the SFL has come up with a loop hole to select a couple of the players from that side.... who knows. the SFL has been known to have some strange selection criteria for things in the past (namely the more recent club of the year award ;) ;) )

I guess it will just be one more thing to debate once the side gets announced

Quite dissapointing for those that played in those Plympton sides if they can't get recognised in this sort of thing. While i was only a little kid then i remember watching some extraordinary football being played by some absolute champions. Talbot would take a hanger on blokes heads and dish the ball off before he hit the ground!

S Talbot, J Bourke, B Salisbury, S Salisbury, K Nadebaum, P Harby would have to have been some of the best footballers to have ever played Adelaide local footy full stop, let alone the SFL.

T Potts has won flags SFL flags with Plympton x3, and I think Morphett Vale??? And Kangarilla??? Correct me on these as I dont have all the facts here. He'd be the John Cahill of SFL surely!

Yes The player must have played at least 100 A Grade games whilst the club is involved in SFL.
ie Flagstaff couldn't nominate Doug Degenhardt as he only played 92 A Grade games in SFL.
Doug won 4 B&F's (2 whilst in SFL).
Doug actually played about 280 for Flagstaff in total but most were whilst FHFC was in Glenelg South League

Cheers 85 Good Year, That sounds fair to me

If thats the case noone from plympton can make the side. they were only in the SFL for 3 years. So they could have only accumulated 66 games at an absolute maximum.

disgrace!!! that side had some of the best players who ever played in this comp!!!
Steven Talbot should be in the 1st 5 picked!!!
probably should be named captain!

Hardly team of the century when every side that has played in this comp cant nominate.

How is that a disgrace? I think the criteria is actually quite good otherwise the team would be full of guys who went on to play AFL.

Definatley has to be the coach of the side.

read previous post on this thread. that pretty much awnsers your question... how can a side that won 3 flags in a row not be considered to nominate players...

Also coached Plympton to the 1985 premiership as well, but that was Glenelg South League.

Not a bad strike rate 1 every 3 or 4 or so years most coaches will take that any day of the week!

Not too shabby for a bloke that officially could not kick a footy if his life depended on it...

If this is true regarding Potts and his coaching record, can someone tell me why in the messenger this week, the plymton team of the SFL, lists their coach as Brett smallcombe? Is this correct or a misprint? ???

definately a misprint Pottsy was coach & john williams his assistant. adding on from jabber he also coached plymptons 81 premiership team and before that West Ad U/19s 1978 to glory.

FWIW Pottys time at plympton over 4 periods approx 12-13 years runners up 1980 premiers1981 runners up 1982 premiers 1985 all glenelg south 87 88 89 premiers SFL 1990 runners up SAFA = 8 g/f 5wins 3 losses

Haven't seen many players mentioned in the teams listed so far in the Messenger that are pre 1980's. Is this because records have been lost of players from pre 1980 are just these players are not rated that highly?

Very true 1983.
This is the list of names posters have come up with so far

90 - current

M.Jolly - Brighton - Midfield
S.Fishlock - Morphett Vale - Midfield
J.Vick - Cove - Midfield
S.Pollard - Morphett Vale - Forward
D Hibberd - Noarlunga - Forward

70/80's

B.Taylor - Morphett Vale - Forward
J. Mott - Noarlunga - Forward

10/20's

COACH
T.Potts (Plympton/Christies/Kangarilla/Morphett Vale)

Close to 70% coming from the 70's and 80's. Not many before that and not too many after, considering these players are freshest in our memories (could be due to the saying... The older I get the better I was.... Ha Ha Ha!!)

Not too many older posters on here that go back past the 70's I guess thats the reason not many have been mentioned.

I think "1983" was eluding to the sides already named in the Messenger.
The reason is simple. All those clubs featured so far did not play in the SFL prior to 1980's. They are naming their best to have played for them in the SFL (eg this is also why Plympton's list wouldn't have include any that joined them after 1990)

Thanks for clearing that one up BTP. I noticed no one listed in 10/20's, I thought C. Lovelock might be worth mentioning. Not too sure of his credentials but he did play in a few premierships, had a best and fairest and has the SFL reserve grade best and fairest medal named after him.

Lovelock also won the A Grade Mail Medal in 1927. According to the SFL site, between 1926-1936, only 3 different people won the medal......

1926 M.Corbett
1927 C.Lovelock
1928 R.Branson

1930 R.Branson
1931 M.Corbett
1932 M.Corbett
1933 M.Corbett
1934 R.Branson
1935 M.Corbett
1936 M.Corbett

Also, I know I SHOULD know this, but given that Lovelock won it in '27, I can only assume he was an integral part in Aldinga's six-peat? so may have a fair few flags to go with his Medal.

I can only assume that Corbett, Lovelock, and Branson were midfielders. If so the list of midfielders seems to be growing. as we all know a side cant only be made up of just midfielders. is going to be very hard to pick who gets selected.
I wonder how they are gonna select certain positions.
for example. the forward and back pockets, will they pick -
a) a second (or third) full forward or full back.
b) 2nd teer midfielders to "swap" on the ball.
c) specialist foward and back pockets.

On another note does anyone know who is going to be in this weeks messenger? It didnt say last week.

Mark Charlton from Noarlunga was one of the best players I ever saw. Think he was even BOG in the premiership year.
