SANFL restructuring Junior footy in Metro Area?

Postby 1919 » Tue Oct 06, 2015 6:13 pm

hearing some interesting reports regarding above with the existing 3 metro juniors leagues and SFL junior league to be dissolved and SANFL clubs to then run junior comps for the clubs in their designated zones from 2016.

From what I understand there are presentations are being organised to relay the news to interested stakeholders from clubs in the different junior leagues the first to be held this evening for MSJFL clubs.

Any word from SFL on this and has it ever been factored into any FDC models?

Apparently SFL is now part of the metro zone now and the intention is to dissolve the junior teams into a metropolitan district league. Seems the plan is to play all junior grades (below U/18 level) on Sundays in divisions based on League club zones.
At the moment details are limited but is seems that the clubs in HFL, GSFL, BLGFA & APFL are exempt, yet the clubs in NEMJFL, MWJFL, MSJFL & SFL will be mandated to be a part of it. Effectively they need the SFL to be involved otherwise South Adelaide will not have involvement.

The issue with one size fits all is the SFL is structured differently to the metro comps, those clubs are effectively separate junior clubs to the seniors (as we have seen in the Edwardstown example), whereas the SFL clubs are run as single units. Playing integrated Saturday juniors is an important part of a number of our clubs' cultures.

On the boundaries it becomes difficult too.
Flagstaff Hill included but Blackwood, Mount Lofty & Ironbank is not
Aldinga included but McLaren & Willunga not
Smithfield included but Gawler South, Gawler Central & Willaston not
Central United, Eastern Park & Central United included but Virginia not
Houghton Districts included, but Gumeracha & Kersbrook not

As it stands, the competition will probably looks like this:

South Adelaide Junior District League
Aldinga
Noarlunga
Port Noarlunga
Hackham
Christies Beach
Lonsdale
Morphett Vale
Reynella
Happy Valley

Glenelg Junior District League
Cove
Marion
Brighton
Morphettville Park
Plympton
PHOS Camden
Lockleys
Henley

West Adelaide Junior District League
Mitchell Park
Flagstaff Hill
Edwardstown Junior
Kenilworth
Colonel Light Gardens
Flinders Park
Fitzroy

Norwood Junior District League
Athelstone
Golden Grove
Modbury
Hectorville
Hope Valley
Payneham Norwood Union
Tea Tree Gully

Woodville-West Torrens Junior District League
North Haven
Port District
Portland
Rosewater
Seaton Ramblers
SMOSH West Lakes
West Croydon
Woodville South

North Adelaide Junior District League
Broadview
Gaza
Gepps Cross
Greenacres (no jun curr.)
Ingle Farm
Kilburn
Mawson Lakes (no jun curr.)
Para Hills
Pooraka
Walkerville

Central District Junior District League
Angle Vale
Brahma Lodge
Central United
Eastern Park
Elizabeth
Salisbury
Salisbury North
Salisbury West
Smithfield

Sturt Junior District League
Mitcham
Unley Mercedes Jets
Goodwood Saints
Glenunga

If SFL find a way out of it, South Adelaide will not have a presence and Glenelg would be severely hampered. Possibly there could be a combined Sturt/Glenelg division.
Without the Hills being involved, Sturt is impacted heavily

Not to sure if this is all bulls**t but I don't mind it. No reason why the south zone still couldn't play on a Saturday when playing against each other.

Whats the point of it? Flaggies has its majority of its juniors at South so what benefit would it give West Adelaide?

Just a quick point of note, Kids are zoned to an SANFL club based on where they live, not the club they play for.

Seems a good idea for those current junior comps in the metro area that are all played on Sundays, not a hell of a lot will change, but I can;t see how the SFL clubs will agree to it apart from the clubs like Marion, Lonsdale and MV Park who don't have Sat juniors.

Will they have a choice or will it be made for them.

The way the SFL was told was there is no choice, the decision has already been made. SFL in, HFL exempt.

So a club like Blackwood, who are 20 mins to the Adelaide CBD are not included? In fact most HFL clubs are closer to Adelaide than SFL clubs!

First decent thing I've seen come out of the SANFL for juniors in the 5 years I've been involved
Fully support what they are doing.
There may have to be some tweaking, and those with a self interest will fight it to the death, but the transition rate from juniors to seniors is at a devastating rate and getting worse.
Finally, the SANFL is being the peak body and doing something about it

There's 1 Flaggies lad who had to move from Glenelg to South in 2015, and if it goes ahead looks like he'll be at West Adelaide in 2016. Geez ...

As per SFL has kept this quite!!
Be done with it and join the SAAFL.

LGIL , Let me get this correct, Sat in the SFL will only see A and B grade games or is it our Sunday comp teams?

This is a SANFL request? A competition that is struggling and comes up with this instead of restructuring the SANFL.
Again an opportunity for leadership!!!

This is a massive shit sandwich for the SFL clubs. Will completely change the most important part of the comp in my opinion, and that is having all the grades together at the same venue (mostly) on a Saturday. Will see a decrease in juniors watching seniors and vice versa. Only winner I see from this is the SANFL and a grab for power. I certainly hope that most clubs will aggressively defend our competition and the current structure. Cannot think of a single benefit to the clubs from this, with the exception of a few who do not field Saturday juniors.

Don't know enough about the proposal as yet, but from what I have seen here it does not look like there are any benefits to the clubs involved.

So reading between the lines,

There has also been some discussions on SANFL under 16's development squad sides playing a full year at SANFL clubs instead of the 6 or so games they play currently. Sides would follow the SANFL u/18's model.

Is the proposed move to sunday footy partly to accommodate the SANFL development sides for Sat footy??

I'm all for kids development at SANFL squads, but if you have 45-55 kids turn up in Feb 2016 wanting to play u/14's at say Happy Valley, Flagstaff hill and Reynella ( which is happening most years) and there's now only 1 game on a Sunday available, IMO junior numbers across the league are going to drop off rapidly!

U/18 is not in scope (it is U/16 and down). It was mentioned that the games could still run on Saturdays but would be programmed independently (as teams would likely be playing against teams with seniors outside of the SFL as part of the equalization effort). Ie Noarlunga could be playing Hackham in the seniors, but due to the difference in junior strength, the U/14s could be playing Payneham Norwood Union and the U/16s be playing Flinders Park. Neither of these teams are likely to want to play on the Saturday so Sunday would be the default.

The SFL announced it at the most recent strategic meeting.

So can the SFL just agree to it or does it come down to a club vote to be involved?

With the HFL and GSFL not included could this be enough for SFL clubs to look at other leagues?
