For someone who calls themself Punk you have very mainstream taste. :P

FWIW Max top whatvever lists have very little credibility. I think they are put together by a committee of suits whose radios are stuck on Gold FM or Mix FM. They once did a "Top 50 Australian Songs" and the only Nick Cave song on it was that pile of dross he did with the Singing Budgie.
"They got Burton suits, ha, you think it's funny, turning rebellion into money"

We play our Velvet Underground albums (ON VINYL!!!) and talk about the "good old days".
I sincerly hope by that saying you are implying I am a musical snob!

By the way some others that haven't been mentioned in this thread....

Icehouse - Great Southern Land (Obvious)
Redgum - Pete the Cabbie (About an Adelaide Taxi driver - mentions a few Adelaide suburbs)
The Models - Two cabs to the Toucan (Pretty sure this is about the old dance club in adelaide from the 70's)

Never said people weren't aware of it, you have to aware of something if you choose to, not accept it, not value it or disregard it (i.e. the message behind a lot of midnight oil songs)

BTW here are the top Australain songs of '87 and '88 from http://www.onmc.iinet.net.au
1987
1 LOCOMOTION ............. Kylie Minogue
2 SLICE OF HEAVEN ............. Dave Dobbyn with Herbs
3 ELECTRIC BLUE ............. Icehouse
4 SUDDENLY ............. Angry Anderson
5 HE'S GONNA STEP ON YOU AGAIN ............. The Party Boys
6 PRESSURE DOWN ............. John Farnham
7 CRAZY ............. Icehouse
8 FUNKY TOWN ............. Pseudo Echo
9 BEDS ARE BURNING ............. Midnight Oil
10 GOOD TIMES ............. INXS & Jimmy Barnes

1988
1 I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY ............. Kylie Minogue
2 BETTER BE HOME SOON ............. Crowded House
3 AGE OF REASON ............. John Farnham
4 RUN TO PARADISE ............. The Choirboys
5 GOT TO BE CERTAIN ............. Kylie Minogue
6 WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN ............. Jimmy Barnes
7 NOTHING CAN DIVIDE US ............. Jason Donovan
8 THAT'S WHEN I THINK OF YOU ............. 1927
9 HEATSEEKER ............. AC/DC
10 LOVE IS A BRIDGE ............. The Little River Band

If midnight oil scored a century what did Kylie and Angry Anderson score????
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I know Farnesy is a goose sometimes but 'You're the Voice' still does it for me

Ditto Barnsey and 'Working Class Man' - doesn't mention Australia but often linked to the Aussie battler

Some great Aussie bands IMO not mentioned much yet (maybe because of no Australiana in their lyrics not fitting the topic?):

Cold Chisel
Dragon (Rain is almost my all-time fav Aussie song)
INXS
Mondo Rock
The Models (pity they chose 'Barbados' instead of 'Bondi' - one of many bands obsessed with cracking the US market in mid to late 80s)
In between signatures .....

Im surprised no one has mentioned "throw your arms around me" yet... only an Aussie band could make a song about a one night stand sound so good...
Don't play games with a girl who can play 'em better...

If we're thinking of the same song, that wasn't Tism. It was a funk type group from Brisbane (maybe).

But Tism did have some songs with a similar theme - Leaper will surely tell us that...
