Silverchair "indefinite hibernation"

Postby Gozu » Thu May 26, 2011 2:51 am

ALMOST 20 years on, the tween dream has come to an end. One of Australia's most enduring and internationally successful rock bands, Silverchair, has announced it is breaking up.

After starting out as 12-year-olds in 1992 and going on to sell more than 6 million records, Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou yesterday announced on their website that they were putting the band into ''indefinite hibernation''.

Efforts to record a new album since 2009 had revealed that timeless band-breaker - musical differences. ''It became clear to us we were moving in different directions,'' the statement read. ''It's become increasingly clear the spark simply isn't there between us.''

Good name for an album that

Haven't done anything good since Neon Ballroom.
And only a couple of songs were good on that.
Didn't play any of their old songs live anyway so no great loss.

Nah, Slave, Freak and The Door were pretty good on Freakshow. Cemetery went okay too.

I agree, I always considered Freak Show their best album. Never was a big fan of Frogstomp even though it came out not long after I first got into them and Neon Ballroom was decent and IMO they should've broken up after that album. I can appreciate the artistic merit of Diorama but I never thought much of that album and that was when I started to lose a lot of interest in Silverchair. The Wave Aid "comeback" show in 2005 was promising but when I first heard Straight Lines on the radio I knew that the band were now officially dead to me to the point I never even bought Young Modern.

No Association (from Freak Show) live on Recovery in '97 (not '98 as listed):

I've always loved these two clips from their Rock In Rio show in 2001. A beefed up version of Slave and a wild version of Freak as the set closer:

Three hour Silverchair special on Rage this Saturday night after Airbourne's guest programming slot. From 3:30am to 6:30am starting with the old Cambridge Hotel show from around '95:

Silverchair's drummer Ben has formed a new band called Bento with him on vocals. It's pop rock but I've certainly heard worse singing and it's a reasonably catchy song.

Daniel Johns has admitted he asked the two guys from Silverchair to guest on his new solo album and both declined.

Of course they did, he's got no interest in an official Silverchair reunion but wanted it unofficially to help get attention for his solo album.
