Soundwave Festival

Postby Booney » Tue Dec 15, 2015 3:04 pm

Replying to a punter on Twitter who asked, “what r the odds of there being SW17 or even SW16 2 go ahead,” Maddah says, “Definitely no SW17. It’s a lot of hard work, stress & risk in return for which we get hate & stupidity #OverIt.”

In November, Maddah said that while ticket sales for Soundwave 2016 are “reasonable”, there were “no guarantees” the event would return in 2017.

Replying to a punter on Twitter, Maddah said, “SW17 depends on how SW16 goes.” When asked how confident he is the festival will be around in 2017, he said, “I honestly don’t know. I just don’t know.”

Soundwave 2016 will only take place in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne in January. The festival last made its way to Perth in 2014. Maddah has previously said he was “devastated” to lose the Perth leg of Soundwave, but said it had become financially unviable to keep it in the city.

Soundwave’s 2014 ticket sales in Perth were reportedly down almost 70 per cent compared to 2013. Maddah blamed a “perfect shitstorm” of factors for the slide, including government interference and high operating costs.

The Adelaide leg of Soundwave has also been dropped for 2016, due to lacklustre ticket sales in 2015. “We can’t bring a show of this magnitude down again for so few people,” Maddah said at the time.

A former Soundwave Festival operating company went into voluntary administration earlier this year, after an application was filed by World Stages Pty Ltd seeking to wind up the company’s operations over an unpaid debt. The case has since been dismissed.

This is what the fourth festival AJ has killed?

Harvest
Soundwave Revolution
Big Day Out
Soundwave

The BDO was already in financial trouble before he took it over for what turned out to be it's final year but I'm pretty sure the other three were all 'his' festivals.

He's, by far, the worst promoter in Australia.

Can't argue with the AJ comments, he's a peanut.

Having said that, does anyone else think the Soundwave/BDO circus' had a time frame to prosper in and that time frame has gone?

Let's be fair, each festival needs a big mainstream act to hang the ticket sales on. Without a world name mainstream headline the festival is set to fail. It's the meal ticket of all the undercard acts.

So while it's too many to actually list (and in no particular order) Metallica, Greenday, RHCP, Iron Maiden, et al have all been and done a BDO/Soundwave at some point and without a name that big the promoter will struggle.

AJ is a wanker though.

I think, if AJ didn't treat people like shit, including some of the acts, if he didn't try and make it too big and if he didn't keep blaming the fans and others for his failures, he might've been able to continue to host a successful Soundwave.

As far as the BDO goes, its time was cooked here in Australia for a variety of reasons. From the start it tried to be everything to everyone, which worked. However, once you had more accessible, mainstream dance festivals starting up and Soundwave specialising in the harder side of things, it was swamped by competition.
It couldn't be everything to everyone any more.
Nevermind the fact those behind Splendour were also involved in the BDO, meaning that the same bands were often rotating through those shows.
The BDO was knocked down by its own success.
More accessibly priced flights and bigger aircraft, shortening the flight time to Australia, means bands also come out to Australia on their own more often these days, even if only for an East Coast swing, so punters can see the bands they like more often, without having to wait for BDO-only tours.
But, AJ hopping on board the BDO wouldn't have helped.

Indeed, trying to "split" the heavier side of Soundwave from the BDO and be just as big was never going to happen.

Latest in his Twitter feeds suggest AJ is "doing his darnedest to ensure the shows go ahead" and that once this is done, he's retiring from the music business.

To me, that looks like he's cancelling and then going on the run. ;)

I reckon he's just trying to hype 2016 as the last one. People are more likely to go if its not happening again.

Then he'll say "it was such a success, 2017's back on".

Then in the lead up to the 2017 one, he'll start bitching and moaning again to generate hype again.

Also, I reckon Adelaide and Perth will both get Soundwave back for at least one year, coz after a couple of years of nothing, surely the first one will be a sellout.

Always someone else's fault. Damn punters, not booking venues. Not paying the bands. Damn them.

He claims he tried to get RATM back together for the festival.
He didn't like my suggestion that RATM's refusal to get back together ended the festival.

Apparently RATM's response to AJ went along the lines of "F**k you, I won't do what you tell me!"
