2010 SuperCoach winner ... his story

BlueThunder, 23/10/10

I am still in shock over this year.

I was invited by a mate to play SuperCoach in 2009. At the start I had no idea what I was doing and wasted a lot of trades trading players after poor performances. Late in the year I started getting the hang of the game. I ended up making my league Grand Final only to lose to Sheedy with a team decimated by injury and suspension.

Enough of 2009, let’s get into 2010! I started watching heaps of footy (which I love), trawling through BigFooty and Your SuperCoach Coach to get my starting team decided.

I decide to go with the Premium/Rookie strategy with 5 rookies in the midfield (3 starting). All pre-season long I have J-Pod & Rock pencilled in the forward line. Then round 1 teams come out and they both aren’t named. Confusion and panic sets in…

STARTING TEAM
DEF B.Goddard, N.Malceski, S.Goodwin, C.Enright, L.Hodge, B.Waters, M.Maguire (A.Silvagni, B.Nason)
MID G.Ablett J.Selwood L.Ball M.Barlow, D.Martin, R.Bastinac (L.Shuey, J.Kayler-Thomson)
RUC A.Sandilands D.Hille (M.Warnock, J.Trengove)
FWD L.Franklin, R.O’Keefe, P.Chapman, M.Pavlich, N.Riewoldt, B.Hall, P.Medhurst (C.Hitchcock, S.Gumbleton)

Round 1 team sheets make me change a lot of my team. eg. Medhurst IN

What I was tossing up over the pre-season…
Malceski v Kennelly v Hunt v Ladson
Ball v Cooney
Goodwin v Gilbee v Broughton
Selwood v Pendles v Bartel
Chappy v Hamstrings
Tippett-Lobbe MPP combination? Dangerfield? Gray?

I decide to risk the Premium/Rookie strategy. Also get sucked in by pre-season numbers of Goodwin, Ball, Medhurst, Kayler-Thomson, etc.

Round 1
No trade.
Score 2355
Overall 3192

Round 2
No trade.
Score 2274
Overall 2520 (+672)

Round 3
OUT: B.Hall & P.Medhurst
IN: J.Brown & T.Rockliff
Sick of Hall & Medhurst’s scores. Especially Hall vs Richmond.
Had to get on the BrownDog train!
Score 2430
Overall 141 (+2379)

Round 4
OUT: N.Riewoldt
IN: B.Harvey
Score 2137
Overall 249 (-108)

Round 5
OUT: L.Ball & C.Hitchcock
IN: N.Dal Santo & J.Podsiadly
Had to get on the jPod train!
Score 2282
Overall 253 (-4)

Round 6
OUT: R.Bastinac & J.Brown
IN: C.Judd & P.Davis
I believe Bastinac has grown to full potential – wrong again.
Brown’s groin injury against the Dees looked serious.
Had to get on the Judd train to set up my midfield.
Score 2250
Overall 127 (+126)

Round 7
No trade.
Score 2334
Overall 141 (-14)

Round 8
OUT: D.Hille & P.Davis
IN: D.Cox & M.Jaensch
Sick of Hille’s inconsistency.
Cox is too cheap to pass up.
Score 2372
Overall 82 (+59)
Top 100 – Happy

Round 9
OUT: D.Martin & B.Nason
IN: D.Swan & J.Webberley
I believe the rookies had grown to full potential.
Had to get on the Swan train!
Score 2279
Overall 54 (+28)

Round 10
OUT: S.Gumbleton & T.Rockliff
IN: A.Goodes & H.Playfair
Goodes too cheap to pass up.
But Rock –> Playfair; what was I thinking?
Score 2280
Overall 50 (+4)
Top 50 – Happy

Round 11
OUT: B.Waters & J.Trengove
IN: S.Gilbert & W.Skipper
Should have traded out Maguire instead, I was tossing that up.
Wanted Gilbert after looking at St Kilda’s run home. The YSCC podcast confirmed this as well.
Score 2523
Overall 32 (+18)
Stoked at this stage.

Round 12
No trade.
Score 2573
Overall 13 (+19)
In the top 20 – I’m starting to get excited at this point.

Round 13
OUT: M.Maguire & J.Webberley
IN: L.Gilbee & A.Strijk
Maguire injured and couldn’t afford Lake.
Score 2583
Overall 7 (+6)
In the top 10, really excited but at the same time worried, having used 17 trades.
Decided at this stage that Barlow is a premium.

Round 14
No trade.
Score 2446
Overall 7 (-)

Round 15
OUT: M.Barlow
IN: L.Montagna
No brainer. Barlow had been sensational up to this point.
Score 2388
Overall 5 (+2)
Top 5 – excited and stressed at this point, but only 2 trades left!

Round 16
No trade.
Score 2106
Overall 4 (+1)

Round 17
No trade.
Score 2262
Overall 5 (-1)

round 18
OUT: J.Podsiadly & S.Goodwin
IN: N.Riewoldt & J.Waite
With injury concerns, I decide to let fly with my last 2 trades and go for glory after watching Riewoldt tear it up against the hawks.
No guts. No glory. I am in the lap of the SuperCoach Gods with no trades!
What was I thinking with Waite? The YSCC podcast had confirmed this idea at the time.
Score 2189
Overall 4 (+1)

Round 19
No trade.
Score 2288
Overall 2 (+2)
Really pumped!

Round 20
No trade.
Score 2512
Overall 1 (+1)
Excited as hell and stressed with no trades left!

Round 21
No trade.
Score 2343
Overall 1 (-)
Excited as hell and stressed at this time!

Round 22
No trade.
Score 2326
Overall 1 (-)

Last 2 round I played with one doughnut.

CAPTAIN PICKS
Started with Ablett.
Used Franklin in the split round following the YSCC podcast.
Then went with a mix of Goddard and Swan.
Had Goddard in round 21.
Had Ablett in round 22.

FINAL TEAM
DEF B.Goddard, N.Malceski, L.Gilbee, C.Enright, S.Gilbert, J.Waite, L.Hodge (A.Silvagni, A.Strijk)
MID G.Ablett J.Selwood L.Montagna N.Dal Santo, C.Judd, D.Swan (L.Shuey, J.Kayler-Thomson)
RUC A.Sandilands D.Cox (M.Warnock, W.Skipper)
FWD L.Franklin, R.O’Keefe, P.Chapman, M.Pavlich, N.Riewoldt, A.Goodes, B.Harvey (M.Jaensch, H.Playfair)

I hate these. Nearly every one of us probably had the majority of these players in their start up squad. It is such a fine line between winning the whole comp and fininishing 30,000th.

His starting team was slightly different to most in that he picked Waters and Maguire to start on the field. Most of us including me had at least one of these guys on the bench. He also started Hille.

With the saved money he picked 5 standout premium forwards whereas a lot including me found ourselves in mid-pricer hell.

Those premium forwards fired up early, Waters and maguire worked out fine and the rest is history.

I do think his aggressive trading shows that there is a big element of luck involved. With no trades left for the last 4 rounds he said himself he was in the lap of the supercoach gods.
