Injured Pie Jeremy Howe played a massive part in determining the final ladder positions after his early exit provided a massive shake up in the last round in the Premier League. The most direct result of Moore's errant knee was that dud team Poon Army managed to stay up as the Q Man managed to halt Pool Swimmers' winning ways. RichoRicho was looking a bit wobbly at one stage as well but it was the luckless Pool Swimmers who missed out after Q Before You held on for a vital win.

Eckys Fevolas was another side to be hard hit as their scoring was nowhere near what was required and a fifty fifty match against the Sharks soon turned into a heavy loss. The critical match between the Longwood Lions and REBCats was already starting to head towards the REBCats after Buddy Franklin (not the coach) and an injured JPK had the Lions on the back foot. When Howe went down the Cats started looking at other results and hoping we can sneak in. I can own up to dancing in living room when Howe donned that track suit. What have we become? Someone who is obviously a much bigger gentleman than I, Hondo had his guilty conscience salved when the REBCats fell into the eight despite being ranked 14th in the league in scoring.

There has been very little between the genuine contenders this year and that trend continued but it was the Honey Badgers who were the most impressive this week, racking up a high quality win over a high quality opponent. It seems I have underestimated the Badgers last week. What a cracker that final will be against Has Been next week. I reckon this finals series will be a brilliant one and how lucky is the Captain to get a bye and a saloon passage into the semi finals ha ha.

It's bye bye to Pool Swimmers who scored well but never really made a splash in this league and Hips Don't Lie who could not measure up to the brilliant standards of the past few seasons. They weren't crap but it's a tough old boot this league. Meanwhile Poon Army and Richo Richo are lucky to stay up, Delicious saved their bacon late and Q Man was dead stiff with injuries but nearly made the eight on the back of an injury to an opponent, all the while his real team is injured as. Sharks scored well but couldn't make the eight while Alaska must be wondering how the hell his Lions missed after he was a top four challenger earlier in the year.

Benny Rolf is clear top of the ladder but I don't see that gap in the head to head matches over the next month. I think any one of seven sides can win this flag with my mob probably first round cannon fodder for the Captain next week. I'm not liking FISHs chances of kicking on either as Hondo has proven himself to be almost indestructible in the close matches in recent times. Watch this space campers!

By the way. Some decent banter there Hambone. Only took you ten years with the door almost banging on your arse before you finally decided to stop lurking.

Well done on making it REB. Yes, that does ease my conscience. I don't think I could cope with a loss after the siren like that.

I looked home and hosed v Buddy Franklin heading into Sat night despite knowing Danger hadn't done enough as C and that his Grundy had gone huge. Then Brayshaw, Oliver, Goldy and Gray all went under projections and then it came down to me needing Titch to stay under 178, which he did. But in the end I was a bit lucky.

My main issue is lacking a good VC loop player so I need to address that heading into finals. I'm getting stuck into too early VC choices and then compromising my final C choice due to not having a good loop option.

After dropping to 2-4-1 I ended up winning 8 of my last 10 but couldn't do enough to make the final 4. Unfortunately I am drawn in Ben Rolf's side of the draw but I do feel I match up OK against him and if I want to win I have to beat him eventually. I wonder if Howe chews up his last trade? He also doesn't have Grundy. I don't have Grundy either. Anyway, that's two weeks and two tough games away so mustn't count chickens yet.

I was keen on Grundy but Nank has been pretty good most weeks. My problem is Degoey and Rockliff. Not sure if Smith goes for that trip either. Hope not!

Finals Week One

Qualifying Finals
Inner Sanctum 2591
Ben Rolfsbergers 2585

Honey Badgers 2830
Has Been 2639

Elimination Finals
TEAM_FISH 2486
Hondo SCC 2389

Captain Who? 2716
REBCats 2284

Honey Badgers has broken the all-time Hogg scoring record at precisely the right time with a 191 point victory over a side that managed to score 2639! While Has Been is dead stiff to cop such an onslaught at least they have a second chance and they can obviously go big. The Badgers are the new premiership favourites based on what we saw last week which is fair enough as for most of the year they have been the dominant force in Premier League. One team that had challenged the Badgers for this right was Ben Rolfsburgers who added another disappointing finals loss to their resume as Inner Sanctum scrambled over the line by six points in their Qualifying Final. It’s a great result for Inner Sanctum as they now stay away from the Badgers scoring machine that has got everyone ducking for cover at the moment. The Rolfs narrow loss means they now face TEAM_FISH which looks an easier task than matching it with Captain Who.

In the knockout finals my Port duds and my gamble on a rookie failed to get the job done against a rampant Captain Who. I was out of this match so early I decided to hold my trades and use them for the Semi Final in my Piglet league. I waved the white flag, Groover far too good! As mentioned above FISH got through in somewhat of an upset over Hondo who must be wondering what went wrong as he copped the first week exit. Next week the big semi is Captain Who vs. Has Been and I think the team waiting for them Inner Sanctum hopes that these blokes ease up on the scoring. It is possible for Has Been to go huge again and get rolled again. Such is life in the Premier League.

I was going to trade in Grundy which would have been enough to win but Goldy has been so good for 10 weeks or so I didn't think I would need the help. He goes for 61 and Beams only 85 but I was still in it because Martin went poorly too. Then Buddy goes for 173 and I decided to put the cue in the rack and focus on my other leagues from next week. In my deflation I forgot to try Spargo over Ahern which would have got me another 40 points. That still wouldn't have been enough though.

But in the end very disappointingly done over by a huge game from Buddy. Buddy has screwed me before in finals but that's when I have owned him. Other players Team_Fish had in JPK and Westhoff under-performed so the game was there for the taking but I got Buddy'ed.

Not much you can do sometimes and well done to Team_Fish.

That's how I feel about Zorko. Got burned by having him last year, got burned by not having him this year.

Groover has a good side with plenty of PODs. I was out of my match so soon I saved my trades for my family league because I knew I was gone. Bloody Zorko FFS.

Semi Finals Previews

1st Semi Final – Ben Rolfsburgers vs. TEAM_FISH

It’s D Day for Benny Rolfs who might be known as Ben Eaglesburgers if they keep dominating during the minor round and falling over during the finals. The Rolfs were sitting pretty on top of the table but were left grasping at thin air after promoted Inner Sanctum crashed the party in the Qualifying Final but seeing as the Rolfs finished first they have earned the right for redemption. Meanwhile FISH have a proven finals record which was backed up by an impressive victory of Hondo last week. Hondo was scoring just as heavily as Benny Rolfs so FISH are not without a chance of repeating the dose and sending Benny out in straight sets. But I reckon this year’s Rolfs are not about to get wobbly and that this week they will make a stand. In a match that could make or break their reputation I’m tipping that Benny will live to fight another day.

Ben Rolfsburgers by 90 points.

2nd Semi Final – Has Been vs. Captain Who?

Has Been racked up a massive score last week yet still nearly lost by 200 points. They shake their head in disbelief and look to the fixture and they see a side that also would have beaten them! These two former premiership winners are racking up the points and this match will be an absolute cracker. I reckon the winner of this game could even go on to make the Grand Final. The Captain has the more recent scoring form (although both have been good) but I refuse to believe that Zorko can go big again, he certainly didn’t when I had the dud last year. The Captain wasted his scoring on the REBDuds and I reckon he might come up sort against Has Been who has been a bit more consistent over the journey.

Has Been by 22 points!

Our matchup is basically
Me: westhoff zorko kelly and Shaw
Has been: Hurley smith macrae (and whoever he trades gaff to)

If Mitchell fails as VC then this game could well come down to the Captaincy choice

Hogg Premier League Semi Finals

Ben Rolfsburgers 2364
TEAM_FISH 2311

Has Been 2464
Captain Who? 2178

Groover has been checking the shed and lifting up the carpet searching for the 600 points he lost during the week as Captain Who capitulated in a disastrous Semi Final loss to the high scoring Has Been. The Captain smashed out a massive score to clean up my sorry excuse for a team but they wilted severely against the better credentialed Has Been who rebounded strongly from their unlucky defeat in the Qualifying Final. Has Been now face Inner Sanctum in their Preliminary Final and the Sanctum should be nervous based on Has Been’s scoring in the finals series so far.

In the other Semi Final Ben Rolfsburgers overcame a poor finals record and FISH in a much tighter affair than the match over at Beener Park. TEAM_FISH kept us in the loop as to the progress of this game and there might have been a few anxious moments for both coaches in what was a tightly contested match. It was a good first season for FISH in the Premier League but Benny Rolfs was overdue for some finals success. Standing in Benny’s way though are the mighty Honey Badgers in what will be a cracking Prelim Final. That Prelim will feature the team with the most points against the team with the most wins.

Premier League Preliminary Finals Preview

Two weeks to go until we unveil our latest Hogg Premier League champions with perhaps the biggest match in Hogg history being played this week by the top two scoring teams in the Hogg Shield this season as well as the top two sides after the minor round. My tipping is pretty ordinary at the best of times so my pre-emptive disclaimer is that I have not had the opportunity to closely check the sides before these matches.
What will be a crucial factor is does anyone have Shaw, Hogan, Ryan or Kelly and do they have the trades in order to cover them. Any side that has Brodie Grundy will have a leg up this week, surely Port don’t play Ryder against Collingwood. If Ryder is a late out Grundy will go huge.

1st Preliminary Final – Honey Badgers vs. Ben Rolfsburgers

This is an absolutely massive match. The Honey Badgers have had arguably the best ever season in Premier League history they’ve been a powerhouse this year. After an extended winning streak to start the season I’m thinking that the Badgers might have the trades should they be afflicted by this most recent round of carnage. A team that scores as well as the Honey Badgers probably didn’t have Shaw, Hogan or Ryan.
If any side has challenged the Badgers it’s been Benny Rolfs. Ben Roflsburgers has one of the best minor round records going around but the finals record of this side is less flattering. By going down to Inner Sanctum in the Quallie they now have to get past the number one team in the Hogg just to make the Grand Final. Ben Rolfsburgers actually surpassed Honey Badgers on the table and in the point scoring and it’s a pity that these two sides aren’t meeting each other in the Grand Final as these are the best teams in the Hogg.
In what should be an absolute scorefest I’m finding it hard to go past the Honey Badgers who have a sense of destiny about them this season. My tip is for Honey Badgers to advance to the Grand Final.

Honey Badgers by 77 points.

2nd Preliminary Final – Inner Sanctum vs. Has Been

Both of these sides had mixed fortunes in the opening round of the finals series with Inner Sanctum pouncing on a wobbly Benny Rolfs while Has Been got their record score but somehow came away with a record loss. I’m a big believer in Has Been though and I think Division I superstars Inner Sanctum finals run might just end here.
Has Been has a consistent proven history of high scoring and so does Inner Sanctum but as a team that hasn’t been in the Hogg that long I can’t verify the length of consistency like I can with Has Been. I think Has Been’s 2400 last week was actually a much better indicator of his overall strength than his massive losing score from the week before. Despite Inner Sanctum’s proven brilliance this season I think Has Been is the more resilient side and that he might get a chance for a rematch against the Honey Badgers next week.

Has Been by 108 points.
