Round 6 -Shoot straight you bastards don't make a mess of it

Postby Rik E Boy » Tue Apr 20, 2021 10:30 pm

And so it comes to Round 6, ANZAC round. So get ready for the AFL presenting football as a metaphor for war while any player interviewed over the round will quite rightly deny that association. So is there any actual parallel to modern footy? If the leadership of the AFL was the High Command of the armed forces we would have to say that they are more like Haig than Monash. Like Haig, the top brass at AFL HQ have seemingly caused a situation where a high casualty rate ensues.

The cap on rotations, 666, and the stand on the mark means there is more running and more running while fatigued towards the end of matches. There is also (again quite rightly) extra attention paid to concussion issues. The High Command have noted the minefield they have laid out for the players and admitted the medical sub but that's just more reinforcements to storm the gun pits.

Already a heap of players are down, more than I can remember at this stage of the season. Plenty of coaches have a heap of these guys - Young, Howe, Butters, Fyfe, Sloane, Duncan, Cameron, Hickey, Ridley, Houston, DeGoey, Adams, Mrouch, Cerra, Franklin, Rowbottom, Shuey, Yeo...that's a lot of guys on the sidelines for so early in the season. Perhaps the general (ha ha) policy this season might be to hold the hamstring guys instead of heaving them. You certainly wouldn't be trading out a Ridley this week. But some of these abbreviated games could allow the luckier amongst us to snaffle a Houston or Ridley on the cheap. Unfortunately, I am not one of them and like most coaches I'm plugging holes as well.

OVER THE TOP!

He's fine mate. He will be back on deck for a solid 82 next week.

Have avoided the major injury concerns so far except for Butters. In saying that Laird, Docherty and Walker all went off at various stage with minor injuries which I don't think we have heard the end of yet.

Think I'm going for another no trade week despite being very tempted to get rid of Campbell and Clarke. Really don't like many of the rookie options at the moment. McCreery is averaging 57 but that is on the back of 3 goals in his first 2 games. Is he really going to be a 30-40 goals a year forward he needs to be to average 50....I don't think so.

I've got an interest in Finlay Macrae, 18 possessions on debut but only a score of 41, guessing his efficiency was low. He has only played the 1 game so think I will watch to see how he scores. Not 100% on Jones from Port either, went off at one stage during the game last round with a foot complaint, did play out the game but was limping off at the end of the game. Combine that with limited job security once Port get a few on the park I think I will let him slip.

Will have a watchful eye on Witherden, reckon he could be a real good $456k premium option. The question over him though is does he get as many possessions when Hurn comes back in and takes kick outs. I will be in a position to get Witherden next week if all goes well.

Other than that I don't really like any of the defence upgrade options at this stage.....if I don't get Witherden I think I will hold until Ridley drops down to the $500k mark on the back of his low score last week.

Witherden is a trap. Not a keeper or an earner. Come bye weeks you'll be burning a trade to get rid of him. Go for Riddler!

Pretty glad I've dodged the Lachlan Jones bullet...…..having a look he was one of the most traded in players this week.

With an extended lay off hard to see him getting back in that side.

Meh, two on the bench with DPP's and I'll leave him there knowing he'll bubble first game back.

I wonder whether he will get back in....

He definitely has a crack but boy his disposal was rushed and awful....only got back in because of injuries and now out for potentially a month a few of the others will return by then.

They have to bring him back in, I might be anti-Ken sometimes but his big area of improvement IMO is bleeding the kids into to the system so they can fill the roles of departures and retirements, Jones is in the long term picture so he'll slot in after a week or two in the SANFL.

Riley Thilthorpe coming in for the Crows, is that a sing Walker may be missing.

I’m joining in the injury carnage with Dunkley

Probably can upgrade to Macrae though.

Another one down. Neale in for surgery.

Have to say I've lost a bit of respect for Neale this season. Bleating and doing everything he could to get Rohan suspended and then when the heat was on him for the umpire contact he sprung a line about the blood rule (when he was aggressively whinging for a free) to save his arse. Glad to trade his injured arse so I don't have to cheer the bitch.
