Hogg Premier League 2023

Welcome lads to the 17th Hogg Premier League competition. We are sticking with the eighteen team structure as our recent poll shows that no one really gives a stuff so as you were gentlemen! Of our premier league sides only my mate Spiro's sharks is not a safooty.net poster although a couple of you blokes are champion lurkers. After 16 seasons of play there aren't too many average sides in the comp although it's fair to say the sharks and my REBCats certainly qualify on that score. We have to play out of our skins just to stay up.

Last year history was made when Mediocre at Best defeated Delicious for the second successive year so Mediocre is gunning for an unprecedented hat trick and we can't be letting that happen lads. JOBBY from Division I is the latest talented newcomer who is sure to prove a handful and most of the rest of your are guns plain and simple. Here's to a top year with me hopefully not stinking up the league's ranking again.

Preview

This season's new Hogg Premier arrivals look set to once again strengthen the league as one of the Hogg's top scorers, JOBBY the GOAT has won the division and Poon Army became the first team to win their spot back into the premier league a season after being relegated. While wycbloods had a fine year (but still went down last year), Q Before You had a horrid season and both newcomers should cover Q's efforts from last year.

Of course this season we have Mediocre at Best attempting to win his third straight Hogg Premier title. He has knocked off Delicious in the past two Grand Finals and the history of this league would suggest that he has already breached the performance ceiling and that a repeat of past glories is unlikely. Both Delicious and Mediocre would have been at long odds to make the granny after about seven rounds so one thing we can say about them is that you shouldn't write them off. They will be competitive once again but I think this year's premier might come from one of the newer teams in the Premier League. I think JOBBY will go pretty close as he has been consistently scoring well for years. The Far Callers are another side who have been doing this but had something of a downer last year. The Callers have very high standards though as they win flags for fun so I'm expecting Ron Burgundy's boys to be right in there at the business end of the season.

Of some of the more established Premier League coaches I'm really like TEAM_FISH's chances, along with Ecky's Fevolas who already lead the scoring. Both of these teams have seen a bit of finals action, or in FISH's case, a lot of finals action. I would rate FISH as the best team not to have saluted on form over the past five years. It could very well be year of the FISH in Premier League this year. Another team who is difficult to discount is the Roosters although their form is not as consistent as some of the sides named above. I expect the Roosters to be active in August but they will face stiff competition in the form of InnerSanctum and Summer of George in particular. DAISYSDUDS command respect and he would be disappointed in his debut Premier season and I expect a return to form and possible finals action for him.

The next group of teams will threaten at times but I believe they might be watching on come August. Quite often it is the veteran teams who tend to end up in the relegation bunfight and I can see teams such as Hondo Crows SCC, Richo Richo Man and Captain Who struggling a bit, at least in comparison to past years. One of these teams could even be a surprise relegation chance. The newly promoted Poon Army has finished as high as second and as low as second last in recent Premier seasons so I'm tipping this year he splits the difference and finishes just outside, being a chance late though.

The last group are teams who might struggle. Chops Clots have started out well on the scoring but as a side yet to taste finals action, it's not good news that the standard has gone up again. Dave will be happy to be scoring points though as that has been an issue in the past. Wild HORNE Berry might consider themselves hard done by to be included in this group as Bertie has shown his best is good enough to go deep but will he replicate his best or will the ice baths prove too tough (yeah that didn't take long did it?).

This brings me to the two sides I believe will struggle to survive the drop. The Sharks always seem to be in this conversation but they often start the season well and even though they tail off the early season wins usually give Spiro the buffer to survive. He will need to win early again I feel. Then there is my mob. I reckon this is the last year I'll be covering Premier League as it might be time up for me. I'm the closest thing to a bye in this competition and I find it hard to get my head around the fact that I won nine straight as recently as 2021. This year will be a bit more like last year and already my side is a mess. I reckon I spoon up and make a good Division I commentator next season.

Finally Bailey Dale comes to the party. I'm sure I'm not the only coach to bench Oscar Baker, but thanks to Uwland out, I can loop his score back in, problem is, so can my opponent Far Callers who look tough to beat.

I reckon you could put the clots straight into relegation battle contention after this week REB.. The lunacy idea from this coach to start Esava as R2 and have no other option in the rucks is paying off awfully to put it politely.
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

SuperCoach scoring has not returned to the heights of last year and overall it appears that Premier League has got off to a Geelong-like start to the season with a few teams scoring bugger all but collecting the win (you lucky ****). That dart certainly isn't aimed at HORNEY Berry who unlike JHF certainly got his kicks on the weekend. Bertie was top of the class with his 2340 to put the FISH right into the frying pan to start the season. We've had the showdown and the derby but well know the REAL Comptroller Atkins is the DUDJOB DERBY as the two mates (IKR, Daisy with mates lol) faced each other for the first time in the Premier League. History will record that it was DAISY who got the JOB done but both teams showed notice to us all that they are genuine threats to the title. This was the form i expected to see from DAISY last season and he's off to a flyer.

The hard luck story of the first round was a one point defeat by Delicious as they fell agonisingly short of the Captain who managed to salute by the barest of margins. The latest of late withdrawal of LDU sunk my REBCats as the Captaincy Clarry call got the Farcs over the line kicking away towards the end. Inner Sanctum and Poon had another close game with Hambone sunk in the end by an underperfoming Callaghan. You don't need much to go wrong in Premier to cough up the points as Hambone and myself have found out already. Spiro's Sharks were another team to have a close match as his boys managed to sneak in by 11 points over Hando.

In the failed to fire a shot department, Chops has outed himself with the "move of the year" so far as Esava at R2 is points poison. Even with Geelong stone motherless on the table, he still isn't getting points and Chops barely made 2000 which was at least 150 under par. Reigning Premier Mediocre lived up to his name and his usual early season formline but we all know not to write off a champion, especially when he's done it twice. But still, it was a stinky start for Nix.

The second round of Premier League action was characterised by some spudtactularly poor showings by some very good coaches last weekend. A number of top teams laid an egg on the Easter weekend while it was left for the competent to take the chocolates. Perhaps the best example of this was my pre-season flag tip FISH (sorry about that Chief). FISHy was one of three sides that couldn't crack 2000 on the weekend and what should have been a tough hit out for Poon turned into something of a percentage booster. Another team that went from chocolates to boiled lollies was JOBBY who put in a rare shit one against Sharks, a team that JOBBY would have been expected to beat. The third sub-2000 side for the round was Chops Clots who were well off the pace as Inner Sanctum ruthlessly dispatched the Clotters.

Mediocre aren't in top form just yet so they will be delighted to feature in this round's squeaker as they snuck home by nine points over the HORNEYS. Ecky has shown themselves to be the team to beat so far this season with some very solid early season scoring although the Roosters topped the scoring for the round. It's always good to get off the mark and this week it was Poon, REBCats, Mediocre, and Roosters who achieved the feat one week later than they would have liked. The unlucky team of the week was DAISY who would have won against most other opposition but were bested by a pumped up Roosters.
