Past Socceroos Player

Postby devilsadvocate » Fri Jun 19, 2009 3:40 am

Thought I'd share this with you lads.

I had an interesting conversation last night with Geoffry Sleight, a former Socceroo, who actually played in Australia's 1966 world cup qualifying campaign in 1965. He traveled to Cambodia and played in the first leg of our final qualifier against North Korea (who went on to defeat Italy in the world cup!!!), but the Socceroos went down 6-1. The game was played in Cambodia due to neither Australian or North Korean governments being willing to allow citizens of either country to enter each respective country.

He formally received a cap for that game during a ceremony in April 2007 where all past Australian players were honoured.

Here's a link to the game results and subsequent friendlies played on the tour:

He was an incredibly interesting man, who played for Bolton in the old first division and also worked for with Leeds as a scout during the 90's.

He lived for a number of years in Australia and played for Prague FC in Sydney.

Most of all, he was a really nice bloke who loved to chat about football and seemed to really know his stuff. I'm glad to have met him.
