Finals or First Past the Post

Postby sydney-dog » Sun Nov 12, 2006 6:51 pm

One thing I have been thinking off, all world class soccer leagues have a first past the post system on who is awarded the premiership, the A League breaks away from that soccer tradition, what are member's views on this

I have a foot in both Camps, given sporting traditin in Australia I think I am leaning towards keeping the final series but I know a lot of soccer traditionalists who don't support the finals concept and would like to see more regular season matches

with only 8 teams, I think you have to have a final series

how they have got it set up now is the right way as we dont have a league cup comp, two separate trophies ie the one united won last year and the gf trophy won by sydney. to tweak this concept the first past the post should be used to select the champions league spots which is top two.

in Australia there has to be a finals series, as there is in the other codes, people jsut wouldnt go for it with no big GF day.
Premiership probably means more, you are the best over 21 weeks not 4, but the Grand Final would be nice to win, i would much rather win the Championship this year, even better if AU can win both.

Last season it should have been first past the post, this season finals are a must :P

But seriously, we are in Australia and pretty much every comp has finals, the Aussie public loves finals which culminate in the Grand Final which is always a huge day. We need finals to make the league more attractive to those who might be 50/50 as to whether they decide to follow an A League side.

A Cup final would be nice but i reckon State League sides wouldnt have a hope in hell of competing, but you never know... there could be some cup dramas a la` the FA Cup. Also, state leagues play over winter while the A League is summer.

Sam is correct that a reserves league/youth league needs to be sorted out first. This is far more important than a Cup at the moment. We are gradually moving towards adding a few more teams i believe, so expanding the sides, sorting out the youth system and possibly increasing squad numbers (and more on the bench, 4?? what are they thinking?!) are the number one priorities at this stage.

The double would be very nice, its gonna be tough from here, Melbourne have got out of jail a few times (vs central coast and perth lately), we need them to start dropping points. We also MUST beat them when we play them at Hindmarsh with Romario to score a hat trick ;)

i think it is very very possible to catch them on points, as they have peaked and will probably drop a few late like we did last year, the GD could be our downfall, as if we are to beat them straight out on points they would need to not take maximum poitns in 4 of their remaining 9 games.
