There was an interesting interview with Cassio where the conversation ended up being about the finals system.

Without exactly quoting him he pretty much said that in his opinion and his attitude is that the minor premiership is the only trophy that counts and he doesn't consider the finals important.

Now I tend to agree with him that finals in soccer is rubbish BUT is that the attitude you want from a player when his going to be coming up against blokes who would give their left nut to win the Premiers trophy. I would Kosmina would be trying to change the mind frame before the seasons end.

Im of the same opinion as him.
I want to top the league, if we went on and won the GF then so be it but not too fussed if we dont.
The sooner Australia scraps this Yankee crap and go to first past the post the better, no wonder other leagues around the world laugh at us.

I agree with his thoughts but in Aus the GF is the ultimate,

Honestly could u name every minor premier in the A-leagues history I bet u name more premiers.

Adelaide had become the laughing stock of the league based on a GF!

I hope the A-League scrap the finals (will never happen) but I don't think winning the minor premiership would please more fans than a GF win

If the FFA cup ever gets up and going then could happen

league - make it 30+ games so everyone plays each other 4 times and first past post.

cup - knockout comp with a cup final.

personaly i think its win, win they get there cup final and they can please the football purist.
The problem with Barcelona is that I like fish and chips but they had to turn it into calamari and patatas

Definate win/win, I love that idea.
Would love to see a decent Cup comp with all the Premier League teams from the States involved.
Imagine Adelaide City v Adelaide United in a Cup Round at Hindmarsh :D

That is the best set up, will be tough to do a knockout comp (fa cup) especially considering all leagues underneath A-league are semi pro at best.

I know if I was Cassio teammate I would be having a quiet whisper about much the Premiership means in the Aussie mentality

No worse than the lower leagues in the UK and it works fine.

Alot worse remembering right down to league 2 are still pros not very often a non league club beats a pro club, which we would need to hold the interest, do think Aussies would take alot of interest if the a league clubs never lost to the lower leagues

A better comparison would be an AFL side playing an SANFL side

We have seen conference sides in the UK go a few rounds into the Cup.
Having attended a few League 1 and 2 games in the UK I can assure you the standard isnt great and they still provide the odd upset.
The standard of some of the Premier leagues in Australia isnt bad and on their day I have no doubt one or 2 clubs could upset an A-League club.
As you said though, there would need to be regular upsets to maintain interest in the comp

Another reason i dont think we will ever see a first past the post competition is the issue of drop offs in crowd attendances.

The A-League would be concerned (using this season for example) that you have two of your bigger supporter bases (Syd & Bri) having zilch to play for half way through the season, especially considering there is no relegation battles and only 1 champions league spot up for grabs.

I dont think there is enough blind loyalty or devotation that would still see near sell outs for clubs who are finishing mid table or lower like you see all throughout England.

The only chance i could see we get a first past the post comp is if somehow the A-League got up to 14-16 teams and then split them into two divisions. Dont know if we have enough interest for that amount of teams.

Simon Hill mentioned something on the radio tonight along the lines of "we (EPL) don't reward teams for failure, they get relegated .. Of course that hasn't happened here YET ..."

Does anyone know what the longer term plan for the league is?

I have heard him mention before they are trying to bring in a relegation system.
Im not sure we have the funds to set up a Div 2 just yet and we would have to work out the logistics. How would sides be selected for the 2nd Div, would they just be existing Premier League sides?
Id love to see the day City are back where they belong

It's always safest for any sporting event to pre buy tickets... but I can't see any problems walking upto hindmarsh and getting a seat on the day

But if reports are anything to go by and you are planning on attending the New Years Eve game you may want to pre-purchase tickets

This Sunday you should be fine purchasing at the gate.

You can't go wrong if you pre buy tickets.

Plus if u have kids u wont have to line up twice on match day to get a ticket and then to get in the ground.

In regards to the cup idea- why not make each state play minor rounds. Eg in Adelaide, all the metro league etc clubs play each other in a knock out comp. Throw AUFC in at say round 3. Top 2 go into a round of say 16 which includes the top teams from other states playoffs. States with 2 or more A league teams could get say 3-4 places in the Round of 16.
