Dunno mate, probably don't know enough about who was available, what sort of coin was available etc .. Ernie Merrick could be one to look at maybe? Jim probably has more idea on that?

I can't help but think, "Who would want to come here". Doesn't sound that attractive job to take on. Would have thought there would be more negatives than positives to the AU at the moment.

Good call, Blieberg had GC humming at one stage and I like his style - also worth having a talk to Ernie Merrick IMO who is a proven and successful coach.

There's gotta be another Popovich somewhere out there though, maybe Valkanis is the man only time will tell.

Don't blame Kosmina for walking away, I doubt anyone could work with a couple of people in Admin for any length of time.
Nothing will change at AU and will probably get worse until changes happen at the top, hard to see it happening though.

Have to agree.
As glad as I am that Kossie is gone I fear that Valkanis will just be a puppet and yes man to those above.
No manager worth his salt would come to United while the self serving tossbags in charge are pulling the strings.
Good clubs have stable management that dont interfere with the playing side of things

In all seriousness though its a pretty good first gig for Valkanis gets to take on a club/ team he knows well. Should play finals and has a chance to win the cup if they play at their best. Also sounds like the squad is glad Kossie gone so this may bring the team together

As Bono said, I can't believe the news today;

http://www.sportsnewsfirst.com.au/articles/2013/01/28/kosmina-paves-way-for-roar-move/

JOHN Kosmina could be in line to take over as coach of Brisbane Roar next season after his shock resignation from A-League title contenders Adelaide United.

John Kosmina shockingly quit his position of head coach of Adelaide effective immediately

Kosmina blindsided the Reds on Monday, announcing through a statement he was quitting immediately due to a lack of trust in the club environment.

The end of Kosmina's second stint as Adelaide coach came amid a strong season for the Reds, who sit in fourth just six points behind leaders Central Coast.

Assistant coach Michael Valkanis will step up into the top job.

Adelaide chairman Greg Griffin said he was "amazed" by the sudden departure of Kosmina, who had been in discussions over a contract extension.

But it has emerged Kosmina may have left Adelaide knowing there would be another job waiting for him next season.

It's understood the coach had sounded out Brisbane officials about the prospects of a coaching job being available at the Roar next season prior to quitting.

The reigning champions, who appointed Mike Mulvey mid-season to replace sacked Rado Vidosic, are struggling this season and there are ongoing rumours of player discontent with front office.

A Roar spokesman, who denied any knowledge of Kosmina's interest, said Mulvey had an iron-clad contract until the end of the season, and then his position would be reviewed.

Kosmina coached the Brisbane Strikers in the old NSL from 1999-2003.

The 56-year-old was the inaugural coach of Adelaide and, after a brief stint with Sydney FC, returned in 2011 after Rini Coolen was removed as coach of the senior team.

Coolen received a $700,000 out-of-court settlement last week after taking legal action against the club over his departure.

Kosmina said in a statement to footballaustralia.com.au he had no regrets about his carefully-considered decision to walk out on the Reds.

He said he returned in 2011 knowing the club's culture had been "eroded over time" but was "prepared to give it a shot."

However he had come to realise the club had "no direction".

"There is no vision. Decision-making at management level is reactive and impulsive at best, and there is no consistency in managerial procedure," the statement said.

"There is far too much whispering in corridors and around corners.

"I feel sorry for (owner) Rob Gerard, and I also feel for directors Richard Noble and Phil Lounder - people I trust.

"But I simply cannot, and will not, work in an environment which otherwise lacks trust."

There had been speculation Kosmina's position was on shaky ground, especially after the departures of 2010-11 Golden Boot winner Serginho van Dijk and Zenon Caravella increased scrutiny on his man management.

But Griffin insisted he was "amazed" by Kosmina's decision, and the fact the coach announced his resignation publicly before telling the club.

He was also puzzled by Kosmina's suggestions of a lack of trust, saying the club had agreed to discuss the coach's request for a two-year contract extension before a February 12 board meeting.

"I literally have no idea what he's on about," Griffin said.

"... As far as we were concerned, we had a process in place, which he agreed with and took no issue with.

"So to say we are amazed with an alleged lack of trust is very, very significant."

Adelaide have little time to digest Monday's events ahead of Sunday's crucial top-four clash at home to Western Sydney.

It seems that a lot of people on this forum are forgetting that under Kossie, United came within a whisker of making the semis of the Asian Champions League (no other A-League club has ever got past the round of 16), and were either 1st or 2nd in the A-League until this week, and indeed could go to 2nd again with a good result this weekend. The Van Dijk situation was disappointing but was the only man management glitch in Kossie's time in charge. The recruits he got in Jeronimo, Carrusca and Ferreira have all been exceptional. Kossie's alleged lack of tactical knowledge must be weighed against all this. It is a big call for those of us who aren't professional soccer people to claim that he is not up to the job tactically. It's my view that he was one of the best three coaches in the league, and that it's unlikely that Valkanis or anyone else will do a better job than Kosmina. This, and the Rini Coolen saga both reflect very poorly on Greg Griffin and the Board, who seem to be out of their depth when it comes to sport.

What do you have to say about Caravella? Gone from club champion to not getting a game to gone.

They were getting stuck into Valkanis on SEN today, basically alluding to whiteanting in that he was the common element in the undoing of both Vidmar and Kossie .. I 'm not an expert like those blokes are supposed to be, but seemed a bit harsh.

I heard from someone down there that last week Valkanis was told he could have the job next year if he wanted it because Kossi wasnt going to be re-appointed no matter where United finished.

Interesting there was a meeting scheduled for 10:00 this morning and Griffen and Valkanis were already there before Kossie chucked it in.
Do you think there was another twist if Kossie hadn't resigned?

Except Vidmar led AU to the ACL Final in 2008 so Kossies achievement is not that great.

By other A-League club I meant club that isn't Adelaide United.
Getting to the quarter finals against the teams we were up against is a massive achievement.
