can't blame the coach when the playing list clearly isn't up to scratch. viddie has shown his worth as a coach many times and with some smart recruiting things will quickly improve

well to a point its the same squad. but not sasa, costanzo, sallay, deigo, reid has been out injuryed have proven to much for Adelaide to lose or be without also the replacments havent been good enough and it is viddy fault cause he choose the player we have signed, resign or let go.

Correct me if i am wrong but isnt recruiting part of Viddy's job description. I understand there are scouts, confidants etc but surely he has the final say on who will be in his squad for the season.

From what i have seen we have 2 international strikers who cannot be on the pitch at the same time, A korean midfielder sitting on the bench. 3 Brazilians who appear unhappy with how they are going and i am not sold on Hughes in the midfield.

The biggest challenge would be finding an adequate replacement. I dont think there are many highly qualified coaches in Australia and do we have enough $$$ to attract a credible manager from O/S.

Also we would miss out on Vidmar's utterly confusing ramblings which are always good for a laugh.

I think I'd like to see Viddie at work with a stable front office.
It would appear the stuff going on behind the scenes is equally unsettling for the coaching/playing staff.

Maybe that's a naive perception....but I can't believe we've gone from last year's stellar performance to this one.
The lack of belief and team ethic is unbelievable.
It is rare I don't watch a game involving my team to its conclusion, whatever the result, but I just could not watch the end of Saturday night's debacle. Awful.

I think its time Vidmar got the arse!!
When a team becomes as fragmented and dis-organised as what Adelaide United have become this season, I am unable to justify the position of the coach. It is his responsibility to unite and get the best out of a group of players. Yes we have had some injuries, but all clubs in all codes are faced with such challenges all the time. I'm tired of the persistent excuses revolving around injuries. If a team/squad was adequately managed, every member of that team should have a full understanding of the roles that they may be required to fulfil if injuries occur. A clear example of this is our defence at the moment. IMHO Adelaide's injuries to key players have blatently exposed the lack of understanding of the game plan by second tier players that have come into the team and Viddie must take responsibility for this. Instead he deflects criticism with piss weak excuses that reflect terribly on the professionalism and image of the club. He is not an adequate manager of players and I think our inadequate defensive pressure, our lack of structure going forward and the obvious unrest in the playing group clearly indicates that the group are not at ease with thier roles in the team.

Too much finger pointing and not enough action for me

Sacking Aurelio Vidmar is premature

VAL MIGLIACCIO
December 01, 2009 12:00am
ADELAIDE City's legendary triple NSL championship-winning coach Zoran Matic says calling for Adelaide United boss Aurelio Vidmar's sacking is premature as it would not resolve the club's crisis.

And Matic believes Vidmar's two-match ban has fast-tracked the club's cellar-dweller status.

Matic said he'll be contacting Vidmar before the Reds meet Newcastle Jets in the battle for the wooden spoon at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday.

"I'll tell Aurelio to do what he thinks and not do what the commentators say," Matic said.

"We need to support the man to do the job.

"I've seen committees sacking the coaches but I've never seen the president resign because he made the wrong coaching selection.

"He needs to be there until the end of the season. The only man that knows those players and knows how to get the best from them is Aurelio.

"We can't bring somebody from outside to fix the things.

"It's too late; he knows what his boys are capable of and he knows how to fix it."

United crashed to the A-League dungeon for the first time in its history at the weekend when it lost to North Queensland Fury (2-1) on Saturday before Brisbane Roar and Newcastle Jets leapfrogged the Reds with separate wins on Sunday. Vidmar served the first match of his club-imposed two game ban in Townsville after his "beheading" quip last month earned the reigning coach of the year a $10,000 fine and touchline ban.

"If this ban came from the club I'm not happy with that," Matic said.

"But if it came from a Football Federation directive it's disappointing.

"Some of them there are like politicians and nothing else.

"Everybody makes mistakes, a player can make a bad pass, a coach can make mistakes too."

Matic said he was from the old school of coaching where handshake deals were always honoured.

Contracts were presented but never signed, the revered ex-Adelaide City boss added.

"They should leave the sport to the coach," he said.

"I've never been told what to do (in coaching).

"I used to be clear and say, 'I don't want a contract and you can get rid of me anytime but you can't tell me what to do'."

Matic said he had watched many of United's games as an interested spectator since the A-League kicked off.

Matic said Vidmar was a quick learner in his early years at Adelaide City when the former Socceroo formed a lethal partnership with fellow South Australians Charley Villani, Joe Mullen and Steve Maxwell to win the club's first NSL title in 1986.

"He's intelligent enough to make the right decisions, he's not an amateur," Matic said.

"I'm not sure what sort of character his players have but when you've got the committee mixed up and making statements about the players it's not right.

"They should make statements about the club and the administration and how to find the money they need to run the club."

Matic led the Black and Whites to three NSL titles, two NSL Cup victories and a South Pacific inter- club Cup win in 413 games in charge until the club pulled out of the competition just weeks before Adelaide United was born on September 12, 2003.

At first I thought it was Val personal opion and was gonna say what rubbish since he has been trying to get rid of Vidmar since he got the job, I agree its not good enough us being where are on the table even though I kinda had a feeling that we would (see signiture) and I do think Viddy should go but Zoran has a point, who are we going to replace him with??

I dont consider that a strong arguement at all. We are talking about the "world" game here!! To say that there is nobody better out there is an absolute cop out. May they wont get rid of him because Adelaide United know that a better coach wouldnt be interested in coming to a club that is riddled with financial issues eg ownership, which means that the prospect of getting big name marquee players is virtually non existent. Just a thought! I mean if I was a quality coach, what would attract me to Adelaide right now?? Maybe we just dont have an adequate $$$ backing to draw quality to Adelaide and Viddie is just an easy option! Who knows?? Not me!!

Yeah but your right no coach worth anything is going to come to Adelaide at the moment with the finacial issues we have, apprenlty we meant to be getting new owners (I have been hearing this all season, I will believe when I see it) but I mean we may get an young coach with not much experiance and the thing is everyone wants an experiance coach. Personaly I have narrowed it down to 2 coaches who may come to Adelaide but they are both inexperanced. Paul Okon (Gold Coast assistant) he wants a head coaching role so this would be the only thing that would make him even think about it and Alex Tobin (ex-adelaide city great and Central Coast assistant) he has been the under study to Lawire Mckinner since the start of the A-league in with they have made 2 gf finals and the champions league. Like I said however they are both inexperanced as head coaches otherwise I dont see any other manager comming to Adelaide till we get new owners.

Yeah Duce its a fair point. But my thoughts are that if a young or old coach can gain the respect and unity of the playing then we would be better off already! Hence a well respected guy like Alex Tobin, whom is modest and keeps his emotions to a reasonable level (unlike Viddie  ) will always have more credibility and respect from the playing group and supporters, this is a BIG issue at the club now.

Just a gobful of ramblings and mere lip service from a coach that's floundering. He has lost his mojo and the players have too!

Would have to be on borrowed time you'd think, but the club needs an overhaul across nearly every department ... They seemed to have spent hard (by their own resources, not necessarily others) in their early days and need to re-group IMHO (acknowledging Im no expert), now that they honeymoon period is moving further behind them.

Is there someone better to step in though?
Why get rid of some one if there is no better solution?

Slightly off topic, but 2 questions:

1. Is it time to lessen the desire for Brazian influence?
2. IF it indeed did, how much did the Romario experiment hurt the club?

Constance_Perm wrote:Slightly off topic, but 2 questions:

From what I have read, a lot of these Brazilians are signed partly on the basis of their agents making a video tape of player highlights.
Now I know this isn;t uncommon, but surely a more stringent test of ability should be had before signing.
A brazilian import, playing in the A League would be on decent coin, and you'd want that player to perform at a greater level than what's been happening.
I think Cassio has been good, and by all reports could be earning more elsewhere but for his love of Adelaide.
THe open goal that Cristiano missed against Newcastle was disgraceful for someone earning at least 80K a year.

I must however question why the FFA insist that all prizemoney made by clubs be evenly shared. (correct me if that's wrong)
If a club has a good asian champs run, why must the club share it with the others ?

Likewise, why is Adelaide UTD in money troubles after getting decent coin for Nathan Burns and Bruce Djite ?
If they could keep all their prizemoney, would they be in this position still ?
