But, seriously, you almost never see one decision directly cost a team a game in Australian Rules, especially when the team that's lost controlled it for well over half the game. It's things like that that will keep Aussie Rules firmly the number one sport in this country.

The way the game ended could only have been written by a fanatical year 4 Italian student.

Or a ref with $$$ in his eyes.


But, we should take nothing away from any of the Socceroo players, especially Neill who was probably the best player on the park. All I can say is to hold the heads up high, the players in the green and gold did us proud.

I reakon the decision was 50/50 so I'm not angry about that. I mean, imagine if it had happened down the other end, we'd all be screaming blue murder.
What I am cheesed about is that all night the ref (who had had a pretty good night up until that point) had been allowing 50/50 skirmishes to play on. Why did he have to pick the last 5 seconds of the game to flex his muscles!?!?

I would have preffered to see the Aussies go down in extra time or penalties than lose the way they did. Tthey did have their chances and they didn't take them....

i dont particularly like soccer but i watch if the aussies are playing but i must say i am gutted, they played their hearts out and should be proud.

It was the same ref as in the 2nd leg of the Aust v Urugauy match to qalify for the Cup. That's what I understand.

Could not think of a worse way to lose a game of soccer !!!

Have friends who live close to Norton St and they can't wait for it to end!

i think so, the socceroos had no respect from FIFA, oposing countries and the referees all tournament when we stepped up to the plate to play soccer the other teams didnt like it and i hope the Italian cops chuck the lot of them in slammer for match fixing.

having said all that its not all bad. the Asian cup is next year and we have already beaten the defending champions so as long as we get a decent run the the refereeing i hope that we can at least give that a good shake and that we are not to be messed with.

I think that it is very unfortunate that the most popular sport in the world has such an inadequate scoring system. The final score of a game (in any sport) should give an accurate a reflection as possible of how both teams played on the day. Last night's game is a classic example of this not being the case.

That is why you either like or hate soccer. On one hand, you have a team that can play fantastically well, and have dozens of shots on goal, all which either miss or are saved. The other team might play deplorably, have one shot all day and nail the goal and win the match!?! That is the unpredictable nature of the game. What can be soccer's most attractive feature can also be it's most damning feature as we saw last night...

Australia had more of the ball, but all the best chances to score were by Italy. More posession does not equal the better team. Aussie Rules has plenty of examples of that.

I thought it was a blatant penalty even though it was clumsy and not deliberate, Neil still obstructed and caused an Italian to fall over in a goal scoring opportunity, simple.
The red card for the Itite was a shocker however.
We certainly can't blame the refs, yes we dominated possession but the Itites had much more effective shots/chances on goal.
Guus stuffed up by banking on extra time to bring his fresh players on where the Italians were smart enough to use there's up.

Thing that did annoy me was I saw the penalties for the Ukraine v Switzerland game and Switzerland missed their first 3, I wish the Italian bastard could have done the same!

i wouldnt mind as much if we were completley out played and lost to a better side on the day, but we completley controled the game, Guus was well prepared for extra time, and the next stage of the world cup after this game would have been very winable, to get knocked out of the world cup with the last kick of your 2nd round match is pretty hard.
over all though, we did better than anyone ever really thought we would.

THE REFS decision is always right
