Hyundai A-League championship winner Dwight Yorke returned to the Sydney fold today, heading to training after arriving from London this morning.

Yorke will play his farewell match for the Sky Blues this Saturday night in Sydney FC's clash with Everton at ANZ Stadium (7:30pm kick-off).

Yorke will train with the team on Thursday and Friday mornings and will wear the number 19 - the same number he made famous in season one of the A-League - in the match.

Sydney FC 0 Everton 1

VICTOR ANICHEBE was on target as Everton beat Sydney FC in their first pre-season game in Australia.
The striker scored a minute into the second half, receiving a pass from Leighton Baines and turning well before shooting into the roof of the net.

Aussie ace Tim Cahill received a strong reception from the 40,000 strong crowd inside the ANZ Stadium when he came on at half-time.

Everton boss David Moyes was pleased with his side's showing. He said: "I thought we played well tonight against a decent side. They are a bit ahead of us in their pre-season but the players played well. The way we passed it looked a lot like the way we were playing towards the end of last season. We controlled most of the game but they were a bit of a threat. They weren't a poor team by any means, I actually think they were one of the better teams we have played in pre-season."

Sky Blues, Mariners play out draw
Saturday, 17 July 2010
by Sportal

A-League reigning champions Sydney FC and the Central Coast Mariners have played out a draw in their pre-season friendly, the final score 2-2, with three of the four goals coming in the space of seven minutes.

The Sky Blues took an early lead when Alex Brosque picked off a poor pass from Mariners keeper Matthew Ryan and found the net in the opening minute.

After a somewhat even first half barring the opening goal, and it was Adam Kwasnik that squared the ledger on the scoreboard when he tapped in off Sydney keeper Liam Reddy's save from a Matt Simon shot on goal.

But the Sky Blues were not to be denied, and immediately responded through Mark Bridge less than a minute after the equaliser, slamming in a right footer from the Scott Jamieson cross.

Simon went one better from his blocked shot earlier, and found the back of the net in the 66th minute with a volley, and the scores remained as such until full time.

Jamieson combined well with Terry McFlynn through the middle for Sydney FC, while the height of the Mariners was ever-present at the back post in set plays, but Reddy was equally ready for the challenge.

The Sky Blues next face AEK Athens on July 25, in the build-up to their season opener against Melbourne Victory on August 7.

Sydney FC has been given a massive boost ahead of the new Hyundai A-League season, re-signing striker Alex Brosque for a further three seasons.

Brosque, who was entering the final year of his current deal with the Hyundai A-League champions, has opted to sign a contract extension that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2013/14 season.

Sydney FC has added Hirofumi Moriyasu to its midfield stocks, signing the Japanese player on a one-year contract.

The 24-year-old trialled with the club, playing four pre-season friendlies, including a clash with English Premier League club Everton, and coach Vitezslav Lavicka liked what he saw.

Moriyasu came to Sydney earlier this year, and despite having thoughts of giving the game away, the man they call 'Hiro' took a shot at a NSW Premier League side, and did not look back.

Being so close to quitting was ironically a turning point in the midfielder's career.
"Something tweaked inside me when I was close to quitting. I knew I had to come and try out here. This is unbelievable," Moriyasu said.

"I just brought a ticket to Australia so I am just so happy right now."

"The facilities, the standard of football and the coaching staff are just fantastic. I am so happy and want to win."

Lavicka said Moriyasu's ability to play various midfield roles will further enhance the talented Sky Blues midfield.

"Hiro is a very versatile player. He impressed me. Since he came to us and trained he has done very well. We are very happy he has signed with Sydney FC," Lavicka said.

"We have a very good midfield and Hiro is important new player to that. He is the same type of player we looked for. He can play holding midfield, he can play wide and in the diamond."

ATHENS SINK RANGERS IN SYDNEY

Nathan Burns scored the only goal as Rangers lost their final Sydney Festival of Football match to AEK Athens 1-0 on Saturday.
Despite turning in a good performance in an occasionally niggly game, Walter Smith's side succumbed to a 72nd minute goal from AEK's Australian substitute Burns.
It was a disappointing result for the Light Blues who had already beaten Blackburn and drawn with Sydney and left the Greek side as Festival winners.
However, the Rangers boss will be more concerned with the fitness of striker Kyle Lafferty, who limped off in the first half with what appeared to be a groin injury, the same complaint which caused defender Andy Webster to miss the match.

It was a better day for Blackburn in Australia as Brett Emerton and Morten Gamst Pedersen bagged the goals as they beat Sydney FC 2-1.
With 37 minutes gone Gael Givet hit a long ball which Steven N'Zonzi flicked on and Emerton controlled before firing in the opener.
Half an hour later Rovers extended their lead when Junior Hoilett set up Keith Andrews whose effort was spilled by Sydney keeper Liam Reddy and Pedersen netted the loose ball.
Alex Brosque pulled a goal back when he was given too much time in the area with nine minutes remaining.
